A woman was driving along Interstate 4 near Orange City late Wednesday when she said her minivans windows suddenly imploded."
It was dark and the next I knew there was glass shattering all over my face, she later told 911 dispatchers.
While the woman was still on the phone, dispatchers began discussing a similar call that had just been phoned in from down the road. Authorities have since determined at least 15 vehicles were damaged after being shot at, likely by a BB or pellet gun, on highways in the Volusia County area on New Years Day.
The woman gasped after hearing about the other call among at least a half-dozen fielded by dispatchers from alarmed drivers. Deputies have not publicly identified any possible suspects.
Oh my God, so it wasnt just me, she said.
The Volusia County Sheriffs Office said the 15 vehicles were damaged between mile marker 108 on I-4 and the exit at State Road 40 on Interstate 95, a roughly 30-mile stretch. Eight vehicles were struck along I-4 and seven were damaged on I-95.
No one was injured, and the damage to cars, including shattered glass and dinged metal, appeared to have been caused by BBs or pellets, the Sheriffs Office said.
The Florida Highway Patrol troop in Jacksonville also reported multiple vehicles damaged along I-95 near St. Augustine, but said Wednesday night it had not confirmed if the incidents were related.
Another man who had pulled off I-4 to a nearby Walgreens called 911 just after 6:30 p.m. to say that he heard what sounded like a loud bang and then heard the sound of glass shattering in the back seat of his vehicle, FHP trooper Devon Barrett wrote in an incident report.

That happened to me in Chile in the mid 70s. Some friends were driving me to their house for dinner one evening and the rear window of their sedan just exploded and disintegrated. It was quite scary.
I’d like them to find the idiot doing target practice on commuters, and then leave these folks alone with him/her for 20 minutes.
A propelled porcelien spark plug will produce similar results.
When spark plugs are banned only criminals will have spark plugs.
Be careful, kid. That BB gun will get your lights put out.
I did not know that a BB could shatter a car windshield, but a quick internet search confirmed it.
This is Daytona Beach and then the other incidents further up the road close to Jax. Almost certainly related since they are only 40 or so miles apart. I would guess hoodlums heading home to Jax from a day in Orlando having some New Years Eve “fun”.
probably not a windshield as its safety glass and made stronger than other glass windows in the car. all side windows and back windows are made to be broken out for escape/rescue and easily will shatter.
High velocity projectile will shatter tempered glass easily.
Same effect as a weed eater and a pebble on a glass door.
Oh Noes! a BB Gun!
Than the Lord it wasn’t a rock!
I kicked a windshield out once
Weed eaters? Lord! we are surrounded!
Everyday these fools strap their babies into car seats over 25 ga of gasoline and hurtle 70 mph down the road
Yeah, sounds like shooter was mobile just blasting out windows going down the highway. Got a Gamo CO2 pistol thats capable of doing this, but I’m not given to criminal tendencies!
Just the Amish celebrating New Years Eve.
Had plenty of rocks chip my windshield, none came close to shattering it.
Consider the safety glass they are made from to prevent shattering. That should trigger your BS detector.
Do not believe everything internetz searches tell you. They also claim Øbowel’s regime was scandal free....
BBs are made of steel. I suspect it was BBS and not pellets.
We’ve had kids go up and down our streets at night shooting out back windows mostly with some form of repeatable pellet/bb guns. Massive $$$ as it is not cheap to replace rear windows on a lot of these SUVs. Before they caught the kids, a few of us were speculating it was the car glass people that do this, as those shops were packed and backed up for weeks!
I did a little more searching without finding additional confirmation. I think you are right. Car windows yes, windshields probably not.
