Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) seized on newly released emails surrounding President Trump's decision to delay aid to Ukraine, arguing they underscored the need for witnesses and documents as part of an impeachment trial.
“The newly-revealed unredacted emails are a devastating blow to Senator McConnell’s push to have a trial without the documents and witnesses we’ve requested," Schumer said in a statement.
"These emails further expose the serious concerns raised by Trump administration officials about the propriety and legality of the president’s decision to cut off aid to Ukraine to benefit himself," he added.
Schumer's comments come after Just Security obtained unredacted emails between the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Pentagon about the decision to delay aid to Ukraine.
In one email, Michael Duffey, the associate director of national security at the Office of Management and Budget, told the acting Pentagon comptroller that there was "clear direction from POTUS to hold,” according to Just Security.
The unredacted emails are the latest round of new details on Trump's decision to delay Ukraine aid last year. The New York Times recently reported that acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Robert Blair, assistant to the president and senior adviser to Mulvaney, were aware that the delay would prompt backlash from Congress.

These e-mails undercut the entire impeachment inquiry. They show that Trump was concerned about corruption, NOT about getting some public pronouncement about Biden.
They also show that Bolton did NOT resign because of some “quid-pro-quo”, but that he was upset about the legal arguments about cancelling the aid altogether.
The “concerns” in the e-mails are all about trying to find a legal basis for withholding the aid past the september 30th deadline. Some argued that there was legal support for cancelling the aid, and others argued that the president did not have the authority to do so.
This is like the argument over whether the president could use emergency declarations to fund the wall — which also wasn’t about some personal thing, but was a legitimate discussion of whether the laws on the books allowed the transfer of money.
And yes — the house should have subpoena’d these e-mails; a newspaper was able to get them from FOIA, so clearly if the house had done due diligence they could have had them.
They didn’t WANT them because it became clear to the house that every fact was going to go against their assertions. They needed to shut down fact-finding, both to leave their cloud of witnesses who witnessed nothing from being refuted by the ones actually making decisions, and also so they could pretend that obstruction of democrats opposition research was an impeachable offense.
Trump had multiple reasons to delay aid, including trying to get other countries to do more to help Ukraine. Whether any potential political benefit to himself was one of his reasons, only he can know for sure, but Adam Schiff & Co. have created a narrative that Trump's desire to hurt a political rival was the only reason and that it is such an awful offense that it warrants removing him from office. All that is, is speculation on Schiff's part.
Trump's mention of Biden in the phone call was clearly a reaction to seeing the clip of Biden bragging about getting the prosecutor in Ukraine fired...a prima facie case of corruption on Biden's part clearly tied to the question of corruption in Ukraine.
Trump beat Hillary, a more formidable candidate than Biden could possibly be. The abundant evidence of corruption by Hillary did little to damage her chances and she almost won. So why would Trump think that "digging up dirt" on Biden in connection with a country most Americans cared nothing about would have much impact in 2020...when it was far from certain Biden would be the nominee?
