Pittsburghs Public Safety Department is preparing for a New Years Eve display that only they will see: The annual lighting up of the ShotSpotter system.
The system, which covers 18 square miles of Pittsburgh -- around ⅓ of the city -- uses powerful microphones to detect and locate gunshots, and occasionally misreads fireworks as a firearms discharge.
On New Years Eve, according to city Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich, the systems display lights up like a Christmas tree as people fire guns or fireworks into the air. He said the system picked up dozens of gunshots in the minutes leading up to midnight of New Years Eve last year.
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police will be staffed up to respond to every incident of apparent gunfire, he said.
Theres a good possibility that if you fire a shot, youre going to see a police officer relatively soon, said Mr. Hissrich. If you dont see an officer that evening, you might still get a knock on the door in the days that follow, he added, because ShotSpotter can often pin down the address from which a gun was fired.
Deputy Police Chief Thomas Stangrecki noted that bullets fired into the air can fall on people or buildings. Firing a gun within the city is a summary offense, and depending on circumstances, more serious charges like recklessly endangering another person, criminal mischief or assault can also apply.

Hold muh beer for the New Year!
DANG!
In the hinterlands of red southcentral Pennsylvania flyover country the five minutes before 12:00 AM New Year’s Eve and thirty minutes after will sound like a Civil War reenactment.
Music to my ears!
So ... a guy could run around lighting M80’s in front of liberals’ houses and they would get a visit by the police the next day? Hmmm...
So the moral to the story is always walk down to the neighbors house no one likes and pop off a few rounds.
or fire the gun from a liberals porch.
The lead will be flying as usual in San Antonio, where Mexicans consider shooting into the air a right. So what if the bullet comes down and kills a chid watching fireworks, as has happened. Thats just fate.
29 Dec: ABC America: AP: Science teachers, students get Times Square New Year’s stage
This year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square will spotlight efforts to combat climate change when high school science teachers and students press the button that begins the famous 60-second countdown.
On New Years Eve, we look back and reflect on the dominant themes of the past year, and seek hope and inspiration as we look forward,” Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins said in a statement Saturday announcing the plan. The honorees, he said, are working to solve this global problem through science....

Pitt seems to be an intellectual sinkhole.
Dozens?
Pittsburgh natives must be low on ammo or something. Years back, in "poor" neighborhoods in Ft. Wayne, IN, it was like a war had started. The most interesting part was hearing all the lead come back down through the trees, hitting roofs, etc. It was a bit risky to be out observing on my Grandpa's roofed front porch, I suppose, but we did it anyway. (Foolishness of youth?)
This claim is a bunch of crap.
Here in Carnegie, people bang pots and pans to ring in the New Year.
In this area and others where all the lots are acreage some folks of all ethnicities have family members who fire a few shots into the air at midnight-but this is BFE and far from the city-no crowds, no traffic, etc no danger of hitting anyone and little danger of hitting livestock-but fireworks are more common-safer and cheaper than wasting ammo and much prettier to look at...
Yes. What goes up must come down. Besides, populated areas, it’s too much noise at midnight.
This makes as much sense as publicizing off-limits bars overseas, as the Navy does. Tell people what they can’t do and they’re more likely to do it.
If I still had the nursery property, I’d invite a load of people over for some tracer firing; I have 10,000 5.56mm red tracers just waiting for some airborne time. Plus a few cases of Dragon’s Breath 12ga shells.
Oh, well...
Jeeze yinz are stupid!
The jokes on them. I use a suppressor!
> Jeeze yinz are stupid! <
Only a nebby jagoff would say something like that.
