Struggling dairy farmers building a future with hazelnuts, specialty milk, and creative thinking

SNIP

“Five or 10 years from now, I don’t think we will be milking cows anymore, realistically," the 35-year-old farmer said. "Financially we are fine, but I have four young children who I don't spend nearly enough time with."

Jereczek is trying to build a bridge to the future even as he crosses it. He has planted more than 1,000 hazelnut trees on 3 acres previously used to grow hay — a small piece of the farm that someday could pay off well if the perennial crop takes hold.

Worldwide, Turkey and Italy dominate the hazelnut industry. Domestically, Oregon has more than 800 growers who produced nearly all of the U.S. crop valued at $92 million in 2018.

Hybrids have been developed that thrive in a northern climate and are hardy enough to survive Wisconsin winters. It costs Jereczek about $5 a tree to plant them and there’s nothing to harvest until at least the third or fourth year — which for him is still a couple of years away. But because it takes a while, the marketplace could be less vulnerable to crashing from everyone jumping in at the same time.

[[[Shagbark hickory nuts [and the giant hickory nut of swampeast Missouri] are in my opinion the best tasting nut of all, but darn hard to beat squirrels to and too difficult to process for commercial use.]]]

Have two shagbarks are the property and I totally agree regarding the squirrels. They wipe them out faster than you could pick them.

Interesting information. Thank you.

Hazelnut is one of the newest “nut milk” alternatives.

Trump should get China to buy more American CHEESE!

A LOT of east Asians cannot digest dairy products. That is one reason why you don't see a lot of cheese in Chinese recipes or in Chinese restaurants.

“Once tried Nutella on a cracker, and no thanks.”

Instead of “I can’t believe it’s not butter”, their slogan could be “I sure hope it’s Nutella.”

“Trump should get China to buy more American CHEESE!”

A majority of Chinese are lactose intolerant. Cheese would make them sick. From my viewing on YouTube the only places in China are stores and shops that cater to westerners.

Have you considered testing whether your squirrels taste like hickory nuts? Two problems, one solution.

In years gone by I would have. However, I have Bronx buffalos next door now.

They’d all have a stroke.

Some Indians used acorns. The trick is to process them to get rid of the bitterness. The Farm Journal had an article on how to accomplish that in the early 50s.

There are sweet acorns and bitter, but all need at least some leaching.

There were also chinquapins and of course the venerable chestnut in the east. Plenty of wild hazelnuts too but the wild ones are pretty small compared to European filberts.
