Iran to hold joint naval drill with Russia and China this weekend

Russia and China are bolstering the military threat of the rogue regime in Iran by holding a four-day joint naval drill in the Indian Ocean, starting Saturday. An implicit message seems to be that Iran has defenders in case push comes to shove in the mullahs’ quest to become a nuclear power and wipe Israel off the map, as they have often stated.

Shades of the Axis of Evil.

Nasser Karimi reports for the AP:

The drill, which is to start on Saturday, will be the first such trilateral exercise as Tehran seeks to boost military cooperation with Beijing and Moscow amid unprecedented economic sanctions from Washington. Visits to Iran by Russian and Chinese naval representatives have also stepped up in recent years.

Iranian military spokesman Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi said the joint maneuvers, which are aimed at promoting regional security, will extend as far as the Sea of Oman. The drill is seen as a response to recent US maneuvers with its regional ally Saudi Arabia, in which China also participated.

That last sentence is an attention-grabber. China is participating in maneuvers with the US and Saudi, while also participating with Russia and Iran. That would seem to put it in a privileged position of learning much about both sides’ military procedures, equipment, and vulnerabilities. I honestly don’t understand what’s going on beneath the surface. Given the fact that the US is in a multidimensional confrontation with China, and the great deal-maker Trump is comfortable with complex tradeoffs of political, economic and other interests, there may be something going that we have no idea about.

At most China and Russia could place and support 4-5 warships that far from home, and they’ll be needing fuel and supplies in less than a week.

And they’ll have to seek a pier.

Supposedly the PLA has a naval base in Cambodia, Djibouti, and Myanmar. They have access to the Indian Ocean. Of course access does not equate to the ability to project power.

You don’t have to sink them. Just render them useless fir war-fighting. Gets you to the same place.

I’m not convinced of that. It SEEMS that way sometimes what with all the missiles and so forth coming out. It is much harder to sink warships than people think.

In 2005 the U.S. navy tried to sink an old aircraft carrier. It was pummeled with bombs, missiles, and torpedoes from the air and sea. It withstood these attacks for FOUR WEEKS and remained afloat the ENTIRE time.

The only way it could be sunk was when diver demolition teams finished it off with wired explosives throughout the ship. About the only way to sin one would be to nuke it and that would result in the disappearance of the nation to do so.

Tactical nukes? We don’t need no steenking tactical nukes. A few torpedoes and F-16s would finish them off and be back at the carrier group on time for lunch.

Try to imagine if that aircraft carrier was loaded with ordnance (bombs, missiles, shells), fueled aircraft and stores of aviation gasoline. Then subject it to a few incoming missiles, and drones some as small as seagulls, not to new exotic satellite based weaponry. It would sink along with most of its crew.
