A Texas woman was arrested by Mexican authorities while trying to bring Christmas gifts to kids in border camps, her family says.
Anamichelle Castellano was detained Monday with another woman as they attempted to cross the US southern border from Brownsville, Texas, into Matamoros, Mexico, news station KTRK-TV reported.
The women reportedly had more than 300 gifts they were planning to give to children with pending asylum cases.
“I mean, this is Santa Claus coming in to give toys to the unwanted, and you’re doing what? You’re doing what? You’re threatening her for what?” Castellano’s father, Genaro Lopez, told the news outlet.
But Mexican authorities said the women had an illicit box among the gifts.
When the pair’s car passed through an X-ray station, a container of bullets was allegedly discovered in the vehicle. Castellano’s family said her husband had forgotten them there, according to KTRK.
Castellano was thrown in jail and charged with possession of ammunition, her family told the outlet. She has since been released, the station said.

I approve of private charity for those in need. I approve of people who carry ammo. But you also have to be smart enough to empty the van/truck completely before crossing into Mexico - if you are going to take that risk at all. When I enter DC, I check my car VERY thoroughly for contraband that their police might freak out over.
Having been rear-ended while carrying multiple class III items in my trunk, I recognize just how awkward that discussion can be when the tax papers are wedged in twisted metal but the questionable items are in plain sight. There is no way I would take any risk when venturing into enemy territory, whether Mexico or (worse) DC.

Castellano and her husband, Jehu, operate a nonprofit called the Socorro Foundation. They are among the volunteers trying to help thousands of parents and children waiting in Mexican border towns to seek asylum in American immigration courts.
President Donald Trump’s administration has prevented many asylum seekers from entering the country or removed them from the U.S. while their cases are still pending under a policy known as “Remain in Mexico.”
“Our faith is very strong,” Lopez said on Wednesday. “God didn’t blink. He had a plan.”
