Cluster of 5+ magnitude quakes strikes off Vancouver Island

PORT HARDY, B.C. - Four earthquakes measuring between 5 and 6 in magnitude struck Monday off the coast of Vancouver Island, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The first quake registered 5.2 in magnitude and struck at 8:44 a.m. PST. The second quake, which measured 5.7 in magnitude, hit at 11:13 a.m. A third quake measuring 6.0 was recorded at 11:49 a.m. The fourth quake, also 6.0 in magnitude, struck at 12:56 p.m.

All four quakes were centered about 100 miles west of Port Hardy, on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, and all were measured at a depth of about six miles.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The four earthquakes listed in the article were getting bigger. Last night a 5th earthquake in the same location occurred. It was a 6.3, continuing the trend.

I live north of Seattle. Some of the worst earthquakes in the world occur off our coast. They happen every few hundred years. We may even be about due for another (no way to know).

If these earthquakes indicate something is about to give, it won’t be a 7. It will be a 9+.

I don’t know about that. The Juan de Fuca Plate is subducting under the North American Plate. That is what formed the Cascades themselves, and Mt. Baker, Rainier, St Helens, Hood, Shasta are all fed by the magma that has escaped up from the melting crust in the mantle.

The water being brought in from the Juan de Fuca Plate also has a huge impact on those volcanoes. More water, more pressure going up those magma channels.

A massive slip on the subduction area could pop those channels wide open.

Probably not all at once, but the one closest to the big slip.

Yesterday one of the local Seattle TV stations (KING TV - NBC) ran a lengthy piece on the likelihood of a 8.5+ quake in Puget Sound, and preparations that are being made. It wasn’t exactly soothing holiday fare.

When I was in Vancouver, I never saw so many street bums in my life.

The last time that I visited Victoria Island was in 2005 before the left started imposing end-times problems in Canada and the US so it wasn’t infested with bums yet. It was a beautiful place.
