I’m a trauma surgeon who works near Jersey City, where 6 people died this week
The Star-Ledger ^ | 12.15.19 | Dr. Stephanie Bonne, MD, FACS

When my pager goes off at University Hospital in Newark, and I see a line that reads “Pediatric gunshot wound, 20 minutes out,” I immediately run down to the ER whether I’m on call or not, because I can’t help but wonder if it’s my kid. That’s the added twist of being a mother of three and a trauma surgeon in America. I worry, like other mothers, about my childrens’ safety, and it’s my job to expect patients rushed to our ER who may have minutes left to live.

She's making a pitch for federal funding.

I agree with her that we need to understand the genesis of the violence, but doing that will require throwing political correctness totally out the window and going wherever the facts lead - something that no federally funded university is going to do.

Teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, single parent households, pop-culture, increasing secularism, politicians using race as a wedge issue, gang culture and the entertainment industry glorifying it, bad schools and ineffective teachers, etc. There are likely multiple factors, but when I've had this discussion with many liberals, their answer is often to blame 'poverty'. Poverty is a chicken or egg factor, and determining which is most contributory will again require following the facts wherever they lead.

To do this right, it would require a non-academic coalition of private bipartisan participants that includes a wide array of professional expertise.

I can’t help but wonder if it’s my kid…

“You should move to a safer town.”

My very first thought, too. A trauma surgeon should be able to afford to live in a very nice, low-crime town. Why continue to live in a ghetto putting your kids at risk from violence and gang/thug life?

>Yup. Probably a proud member of docs against glocks.

Yep And probably someone who supports background checks - which do absolutely nothing!

"...unneeded prescription drugs due to the hot shot sales methods..."

I took my mom to a clinic some years back. Sitting in the waiting room, watching people, I saw a couple of people that I'm pretty sure were pharm reps....smoking hot women. I don't think doctors are falling for the free pens.

Doctors, like many others in the academic “elite” have bought the trash spewed by their Marxist professors. It many respects, medicine has ceased to be science at all. Hence the “transgender” craze among many of the “educated elite.” >>>

yes, they know better, because they are brainwashed doctors which means they have many more years of brainwashing than the average college student who is brainwashed in 4 yrs. instead of 11 years!!

These doctors are just like the ussr communists, they question kids about what their parents do at home; whether they have guns or not. They prescribe too many mind-altering drugs. They perform abortions and kill the babies in the womb. They now support the transgender movement and ruin peoples’ lives instead of trying to correct their psychological problems, they do sex change operations and give female hormones to teenage boys and male hormones to girls.

Many doctors are political activists who support the liberal and communist agenda. There was a time when they just practiced medicine and not left-wing socialist politics.

Who uses a pager nowadays? Most millennials wouldn’t even know what one is. Is this a 30-40 year old article that was dusted off and recycled?

Yeah, but often slowly and quietly, with dignity. And the docs respect that, so they don’t talk about it.

Yeah but thank goodness the “top cop” in Memphis is doing something about it by trying to ban guns from cars in the city. That should do it right? Just when you think stoopid has peaked, boom! Some one raises the bar.

Per NYT: 40,000 gun deaths in 2018.

Note to the doc: Physician, heal thyself.

...

Does she run down to the ER every time a child is injured in a car accident? He children are much more likely to be injured in a car wreck than to be shot.

I heard about that guy, that guy needs to be arrested, tried and executed for domestic terrorism. He’s endangering the people he’s trying to protect. Agreed?

Medical errors are several times more likely to kill a person than a gun shot. Her concerns are misplaced. I’d say she is using political activism to compensate for being a terrible doctor.

Hmmmph. This chick, by the time her career is done, could very well be responsible for the deaths of more human beings than your average gun-toting perp....
