Trump signs $1.4 trillion spending package, averting shutdown

President Trump on Friday signed two spending packages totaling $1.4 trillion, averting a government shutdown at midnight.

The bills included all 12 annual appropriations bills for the 2020 fiscal year that started Oct. 1. They also included a slew of tax cuts, extending expiring and expired tax breaks and eliminating other taxes that amount to an additional $426 billion in lost revenue, bringing the total cost of the bill to more than $1.8 trillion.

The government spent the first quarter of the fiscal year operating on stopgap funding that was set to expire on Friday. Trump reportedly signed the bill while aboard Air Force One en route to Mar-a-Lago for the holidays.

Trump’s signature brings to a close a fraught year for spending. At the same time last year, his refusal to sign a stopgap measure over funding his proposed border wall led to a 35-day shutdown, the longest in the nation’s history.

In the final deal, Congress again refused Trump’s $5 billion border wall request, instead leaving a flat $1.375 billion for physical barriers in circumscribed areas.

The bills did not refill $3.6 billion from military construction programs Trump transferred to the wall.

All in all, the bills raised defense spending by $22 billion.

Democrats claimed major victories in the bills as well, such as $25 million to fund research into gun violence, the first such funding in 20 years, $425 million for election security, increased funding for climate research and full funding for the 2020 census. They included a 3.1 percent pay increase for federal workers, matching the raise for members of the military.

The rational objectivist in me points out that the country ultimately cannot survive this sort of profligate spending. The cynical realpolitik in me observes that as ruinous as might be this course of action, it's still less ruinous than a quicker leftist takeover of the country.

It would have been great if PDJT refused to sign until his trail was completed.

Trump’s business plan has always been working on large debit. I never expected him to cut the budget. Throwing criminals in jail... That is what I want for “next” Christmas

The money game.

The stronger the dollar against other currencies the harder for those countries to buy your goods.

Congress doesn’t mind the president doing their job for them when its to their advantage.

Why even bother coming up with budgets when you just push ‘emergency spending bills’ that basically make it the president’s responsibility to sign?

This country needs a hard freaking reset.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the vast majority of citizens really don’t want to cut spending.

Oh, sure they cry that they want less spending and smaller government, except when it comes time to cut their pet programs.

If Democrats want “election security”, we know it’s misnamed. Otherwise they’d be ensuring their own perpetual defeat.

No they don’t. That is why the Libertarian Party doesn’t have a chance.

The Hill is a ass. That 426 billion dollar tax cut will probably end up increasing revenue to the Treasury. If there really is such a tax cut. Being part of the Fake News Media, I don’t automatically believe The Hill.

Well, if anyone had ANY doubts about the ‘continuing resolutions’, is it a MIRACLE that the ‘do or die’ date came Christmas week?
Of course, what BETTER time to ‘shut it down’ when the Force is at ‘peak leave period’ etc, could have let them swing for a week or two etc and a LOT of them would be ‘happy’ for the complete holiday period off(ESPECIALLY when the Govt is wont to pay them anyway)...

Considering the LIBs hold the ‘cards’ (could of been worse) they crammed as much crap in there as they possible could - I can just picture ‘Snidely Whiplash’ and his sneer everytime ‘they’ added another craw in the side of the President.
Gun Control? Climate Control? NO WALL funding?

This basically wipes out the campaign line that BO ran the economy into the ground as they get PDJT to sign a bad bill, didn’t the whole BO regime go without a viable budget, just CRs?

This could very well be the ‘new no taxes’ platform that the LIBs were looking for.

Wouldn’t it be ‘nice if PDJT were to run as an I (or something) and take all HIS campaign contributions with him and hopefully getting enough people to run under his new ticket?

It is almost as shameful as saying ‘we (and our ilk)’ back the Rs as it would be saying ‘we’ support the LIBs.
