Development of a proposed hyperloop transportation system linking Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago would not only be a boon to communities along the travel corridors but also would be a strong business investment.
Thats the conclusion of a 157-page feasibility study released Monday in Cleveland by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc., a California-based company developing the technology to move passengers and freight at more than 500 mph through low-pressure tubes. Consultant Transportation Economics and Management Systems performed the $1.3 million study of the proposed Great Lakes Hyperloop System.
For the first time, the study estimated the costs of building the high-speed alternative to transportation by regular rail service and aviation. It said the cost to build the entire system would be about $40 billion, but investors could expect an operating profit of $30 billion during its first 25 years of hauling passengers and freight.
The financial and economic results are unprecedented, illustrating a strong case for the public-private partnership to continue working to bring hyperloop to the Great Lakes corridor, the study said. Hyperloop will spur the New Economy service industries of finance, software and logistics; thus understanding the needs of the commuter population are paramount to maintaining a responsive service along the corridor.
Alexander Metcalf, president of the consulting firm, stressed at a news conference at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland that the project would be a good business investment. The expectation is that any hyperloop project would be a public-private partnership, with the public providing rights of way and stations and private investment paying capital costs for the tubes and technology.

LMAO!
Although the concept of the Hyperloop was popularized by Elon Musk, he is not affiliated with HTT. They are totally separate companies, and Musk has nothing to do with HTT Inc. HTT has a different methodology of building the hyperloop and it is going to be an expensive boondoggle.
Ah, just like the Dulles Toll Road's (Virginia) helping to fund Metrorail's silver line with toll increases.
Which is fair, considering that Musk poured all his fortune into SpaceX and Tesla to keep them afloat (dividing all his money between the two companies). The Boring Company uses technology from all the companies Musk runs, and those companies stand to profit greatly from The Boring Company. Estimates have been given that The Boring Company will be worth far more than Tesla and SpaceX in the near future.
Since rush hour is different in CA, we could have CA loan their fantastic high sppeed rail to the Rust Belt while CA is still asleep. People in CA will never know its gone.
What could possibly go wrong? Ask California.
This IS CA.s bullet train!!!
you know what , if they’re going to build this thing with private financing I say more power to them. It either works or fails depending on what the public wants. But I don’t want any of my tax money spent on this thing.
That’s “Highly profitable?” I think not.
$40 billion, huh ? Betcha it would cost closer to $500-750 billion by the time the real costs figured in (payoffs to the usual suspects).
I dont think this is great. But Id bet some said the same thing about the road program, building various bridges over the years and other stuff.
Thanks. I did not know about HTT Inc. I didn’t realize another company was formed to commercialize Hyperloop and they have no connection to Musk.
Wow...hadn't heard that. It's really amazing how he can enter a rather mature market and develop innovations. I was reading the history of his first three TBMs on Wiki. The first was a stock purchased unit; the second was a modified commercial machine; the third is almost all-new from the ground up by his engineering and development team.
As for that proposed new hyperloop, it really isn't ready for primetime and will be an expensive boondoggle. Maybe in five years, when Musk has perfected his proof-of-concept tunnels and TBMs.
Heres a little bit of reality. Rail time between Chicago and Cleveland is about 7 hours. Freight schedules are 3-7 DAYS, due to loading, switching, scheduling, and unloading. It sound like cutting the transit time by 80% wont actually cut the freight shipping time by much.
Great, if it’s supposed to be so highly profitable they won’t need one red cent of taxpayer money......right? I’ll believe this fairy tale when the project is 100% privately funded with a contract requirement prohibits and city/state/federal funding.
Boy,do we remember "The Big Dig" here in Massachusetts! While this fiasco was unfolding Barney Fag (sorry:Barney Frank) was the Congresscreature representing that part of the state. While commenting once on the project...critising it in fact...he made the only statement that I've ever agreed with.
He said: "It would be cheaper to raise the city than it would be to lower the Expressway".
The "city" being Boston, the "Expressway" being The Southeast Expressway,a major artery through Boston.
Great. When some of those projects are completed, operational and proven safe, then get back to us. The Baltimore-Washington loop sounds particularly promising. Oh, wait. Aren't those cities supposed to be under water in 20 years?
