Portland Considers “Mandatory Rest Spaces” For The Homeless On Private Property
Hotair ^ | Dec 7, 2019 | Jazz Shaw

Portland, Oregon, like many cities on the left coast, is struggling with a growing homelessness crisis. But what can they do about it? One idea that’s now being floated is to change the building codes so that all new structures (including private property, not just government buildings) include spaces for people to “rest” and “feel welcome and safe.” This understandably has prospective property owners concerned, since the wording is all quite vague and suggests that they will be forced to allow the homeless to camp in and around their buildings. (KATU News)

The obvious questions are already being raised. What specifically does “rest” mean in this context? Does that mean that new buildings will have to include spaces for the “unhoused” (their word) where they will be “protected from the weather?” That’s basically just an invitation for people to come trespass and stay there.

Poison sumac is a beautiful, relaxing plant to give your property a pleasant atmosphere with it’s vivacious brilliant red foliage.

Good. We can send all the homeless off to Portland, where the city will make room for them.

(If that’s the kind of government the people voted in, then it’s fair to give them what they asked for...)

Mandate enough goodies, and I might want to relocate there and be homeless too.

Dumb idea—will just lead to large colonies of ferals hanging around and ruining your neighborhood. Why make lolling about in public more comfortable? That guy in the beanbag chair looks fine to me—why isn’t he working in some capacity?

Or better yet...make it an obligation for any and all elected officials to provide space for the local fauna to "feel welcome and safe" on their private property.

Let me guess. Residents and businesses will have to provide areas for vagrants. What if one of them is injured on private property? Who is responsible? Can the city mandate that private property owners not only allow trespassing but assume responsibility for their safety and welfare?

One more reason, as if we needed any more, to stay out of liberal run cities.

What’s next, mandated access to the homeowner’s bathroom and fridge?

public rest spaces of concrete under which are micro water jets of a discrete timed... fountain. Hose them away in the “space”. This is one variant they could not conceive. Imagine the hutzpah to force a private property owner to provide space— without exchanging HUGE tax breaks for the non-revenue producing “space” they are forced to “set aside”.

... spaces for people to “rest” and “feel welcome and safe.”

Yeah, those property owners are going to feel REAL safe with the loonies, crazies and druggies camped on their property.

Poison Sumac looks a little like the harmless Prairie Flameleaf Sumac tree that grows in the woods and on properties here-pretty Fall color...

Unfortunately, Oregon is a bit too far North for poison Sumac to grow-poison Ivy should be right at home there though-and it grows really fast-we could donate some seedlings to Portland’s homeless rest spaces for shade and windbrake plants...

Write the law to require all current past and future city council members must provide HALF of their private homes and land/property if any other property owner is required to provide ANY.

They already have mandated access to your wallet through the taxes you are forced to pay. So why not give them just a bit more? The next little bit you give is most certainly going to solve the problem.
