Elizabeth Warren Would Rather Make You Fix Your Terrible Public School Than Let You Send Your Kid to a Charter School
Reason ^ | December 6, 2019 | Billy Binion

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) has a plan for public education, and it starts with parents.

"If you think your public school is not working, then go help your public school," she told the National Education Association (NEA) as she touted her stance against charters. "Go help get more resources for [your public school]. Volunteer at your public school. Help get the teachers and school bus drivers and cafeteria workers and the custodial staff and the support staff, help get them some support so they can do the work that needs to be done. You don't like the building? You think it's old and decaying? Then get out there and push to get a new one."

How she expects parents to do this—particularly the poorer ones she says she wants to help—remains unclear.

In recent years, the Democratic presidential candidate has doubled down against charter schools. She adopted the stance in 2016, when (in her words) "a handful of bazillionaires" attempted to lift the cap on charters in Massachusetts. But Warren found herself in hot water last month, just a week after her NEA interview was released, when she was caught speaking misleadingly to a group of black protesters from the Powerful Parent Network, an organization that supports school choice.

"My children went to public schools," she said, pushing back against accusations that she doesn't practice what she preaches. But her children didn't only go to public schools: As Reason Foundation's Corey DeAngelis discovered, she sent her son, Alex, to a private school from fifth grade onward.

"There's no reason poor families should be forced to keep their children in failing schools," DeAngelis tells me. "Let's be clear: It's the schools that are failing the families, not the other way around."

Warren hates monopolies, except for the teachers unions that donate millions to the Democratic party.

There’s no fixing public schools. The teachers union will make sure of that.

Good luck doing anything to change the thinking of public schools! At least up here - union controlled indoctrination centers. When Fauxcahontas says parents should help their local school, she means go do a bunch of fundraising, maybe sit and read to some kids because there are so many illiterates. Help your local school just means volunteer your time to be at their disposal.

Warren put on her Plains Indian feathers and did a dance to bring better education to the public schools.
Then it started raining hard for three days.
“Darn those YouTube videos. So hard to memorize.”

Public schools have only limited accountability. And thanks to Libtard voters here in Fairfax County, VA, we have a school board populated with maniacs.

There is NO FIX for public schools. They are all top-heavy with zero value add administrators. The teachers cannot do their jobs with all the burden and requirements of the admins. There is zero discipline. Obama rules reward those kids who disrupt the classes and act out. Kids have zero penalty for missing exams and not doing homework — they are given every chance to do it over again. Schools follow every fashionable fad that comes down the pike, yet performance declines every time a new fad is tried. The public school system is a shambles.

It’s just ridiculous to think this archaic system can be repaired. The only way it can be fixed is to let parents take their kids out and send them somewhere else.

She's actually not wrong about this: our school has parent volunteers, mostly housewives, who come in and volunteer sometimes, in exchange for literacy classes (they're mostly Hispanic.) Parent involvement IS the key to improving children's behavior and academic success. I've seen it every year for 15 years: kids with parents who parent do fine in school. Kids whose parents don't particularly care do not.

I forgot to mention that California passed a LAW (and Newsome signed it) requiring schools to start no earlier than 8:30 AM. The little darlings just have to get their beauty sleep.

We all know what moving the starting bell back 20 or 30 minutes means — kids will stay up 20 or 30 minutes later.

Public school administrators and politicians are complete idiots.

The Democrats can do what’s best for inner city blacks in crap schools, or they can do what’s best for the teacher’s unions.

And someone should point out to the 34% of blacks who approve of DJT’s performance as President which of those two options the Democrats always come down on.

I understand your sentiment, but the fact is even public schools where the nearest teachers’ union is 100 miles away are having a hard time not failing. The law requires that every human between the age of 5 and 18 who lives in the district has a place in the school.

If the child is wild and out of control because his parents (or more likely parent) has no self-control either, he still gets a seat in the classroom next to your kid. If he throws books at the teacher (or your kid) he still gets to stay. And if he’s really out of control he gets an IEP (Individual Education Program) that bumps his right to be there far above normal kids.

Unions make all of these things worse, of course, but the underlying problem is the large numbers of feral children attending. Of course it is worse in some places than others, but it’s pretty much everywhere. Only schools that have a free hand at expelling disruptive kids might be immune, but they aren’t public schools.

I’ve worked at the same semi-rural school for over 30 years (last several as a sub) and the decline of behavior of kids, starting with kindergarten is amazing. The district spends a lot more money than when I started, has more than doubled staff size—student population is a bit smaller—and the kids are learning less.

Fix your Public School or Support the Teachers Union, your choice, you can’t have both

Public schools are no longer for the purpose of educating children. They’re indoctrination centers intended to instill them with socialist values and leftist ideologies.

She is pathetic. Note the basic assumption that everyone is exactly the same when the assumption should be exactly the opposite.

Everyone go volunteer? To the poorest parents in the most poor places you are saying this? People who are least likely to have either useful skills or any culture of motivation. When there is an answer to the problem available now; today? But you can help fix things over the next 10 years and too bad for your kid though. Go away Karen!

The Department Of Education is solely what broke schools.

Before that came along the school system I grew up in rejected whole word in favor of phonics and new math in favor of old fashioned brute learning of arithmetic.

How about: eliminate teachers unions, roll back federal regulations related to education back to 1965, and ban lawsuits against public school employees except related to criminal activities.

Get the FedMob completely out of public schools and it would be significantly easier for parents to have a say in them, Grey Beaver.

There’s no fixing public schools. The teachers union will make sure of that.

Senator Warren is jumping into the middle of a fight between the teachers union and the other public school teachers and administrators that run charter schools. Charter schools are public schools, and they are frequently run by people who previously worked in traditional public schools.

Many of the charter school teachers left unionized positions in regular public schools to work in charter schools to avoid the one size fits all approach of regular public school systems, and the stifling work environments they have.

What the union fears is that the success of charter schools will show that their schools are not doing a good job, and the political pressure that will result from that.
