23rd Virginia County Declares Second Amendment Sanctuary Status

Gloucester became Virginia’s 23rd Second Amendment Sanctuary county on December 3.

The Gazette-Journal reported that Gloucester’s Colonial Courthouse had a full house, with enough pro-gun supporters to “[cover] much of the court circle outside, standing shoulder to shoulder in support of a resolution designed to make Gloucester County a Second Amendment Sanctuary.”

There was a 90 minute discussion over the matter, including input from residents who were overwhelmingly in support of adopting sanctuary status. The discussion was followed by a unanimous vote in favor the Second Amendment Sanctuary declaration.

On November 30, Breitbart News reported that 22 Virginia counties had declared Second Amendment Sanctuary status. Their declarations, along with the recent one by Gloucester, are aimed at putting state-level Democrats on notice that unconstitutional gun controls will not be enforced.

I live in Virginia and I withdraw my consent to be governed by you fools any longer.

On the Virginia flag it reads “Sic Semper Tyrannis”

It means “Thus Always to Tyrants”.

I stand by that flag, the flag of the United States, the Bill of Rights and the entire Constitution of the United States of America. If you have a problem with that, you can take it up with my AR-15. You know where I live.

In Virginia counties are organs of the state and have no powers of their own.
But these counties’ Reps and Sens have to see what their constituents think.
Is Bloomburg’s money worth more?

In case anyone is interested, the Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 95 counties, along with 38 independent cities that are considered county-equivalents for census purposes. I’m wagering that the vast majority of the cities are Democrat fiefdoms.

Their chief law enforcement officer...the sheriff...is elected, rather than appointed, I assume.

There is a small city by the name of Republic, Washington. The major and sheriff declared it a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary city last year. NO gun laws of any kind will be enforced. (Kind of the “What part of ‘shall not be infringed’ don’t you understand?”)

23 out of 95 counties. Better than one third in less than a month.

It really is just an administrative term. Some "cities" in Virginia are very small and should rightly be called towns.

No, the Sheriff is the king of the county. If the Sheriff says he isn't going to enforce anti-second amendment laws, then for all practical purposes those laws are null and void.

I wonder what passes for a city.

From Wikipedia:

A city can be formed from any area with a defined boundary having a population of 5,000 or more. Cities have been formed in the following ways:

- An area within a county, which may or may not have been a town previously, incorporates as a city and thus becomes independent. Examples are Falls Church, which separated from Fairfax County, and Virginia Beach, which separated from (and later merged with) Princess Anne County.

- A county is converted into a city. An example was the former city of Nansemond, which later merged with Suffolk.

- Various local governments consolidate to form a city. An example is Chesapeake, formed from the merger of the independent city of South Norfolk and Norfolk County.

Where the residents of an area of sufficient size wish to incorporate as a city, they must petition the Virginia state legislature to grant them a municipal charter.

I graduated from Waynesboro High School in Waynesboro, VA

It is an independent city with a population estimate (2018) of 22,628. The surrounding Augusta County Board of Supervisors voted 7-0 to declare Augusta County a Second Amendment sanctuary in December 4th, at a huge meeting of 1800 people at Stuarts Draft High School.

When I lived there way back when, The community of Stuarts Draft had one blinking red light at the intersection of the main drag passing through.

The Staunton–Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area, as of the 2010 census, had a population of 118,502, which comprises the two independent cities and the whole of Augusta county.

That's a vast difference compared to the Atlanta MSA where I live now, pushing six million people, which is the ninth largest in the country.

Once SB 16 and the other crazed liberal bills become law, the battleground will turn to law enforcement. There are essentially two LE entities at play - county sheriffs and city police. Police officers are political hacks, appointed by city council members. Most are likely liberal. The police chiefs will likely share the same political ideology as the council members who hired and pay their salaries. The other entity, the county sheriff, has taken an oath of office to support and defend the state and federal constitutions. Those that are true to their oath will not enforce the unconstitutional state laws. Unfortunately, there are two faced sheriffs out there, so you need to find out where your sheriff stands. There are all sort of different arrangements between city police and sheriffs as to who is the top law enforcement entity within the city limits. I believe most city police departments operate autonomously. If I were living in a state incorporated city in Virginia, I would immediately want to know who is the supreme law enforcement entity within the city limits. If it rests with the liberal police department, you better make provision to move the hell out of the city limits or get your guns out of the city limits.

Not entirely correct. The county sheriff is autonomous. He is directly elected by the county residents who pay his salary. I doubt that the state legislature can touch him/her for following the state and federal constitutions. In any event, it would set up one helluva legal battle if the legislature tried to remove the sheriff over this gun brouhaha. Remember the sheriff can deputize the entire citizenry of his county if necessary to enforce the law within his jurisdiction.
