That’s a GOP Senate talking point for excusing their do- nothingness. “The Dems really don’t want this so it’s not going to happen”. Blah, blah, blah. The Senate Dems will get unlimited campaign ads from Fake News. I doubt they’re all that concerned about leaving the campaign trail for a bit.
Sure they can. Neither Sanders nor Warren is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which likely will have the key role in actually conducting the Democrat side of the trial. They'll just say that they can do more good for impeachment by being out on the campaign trail, talking about impeachment, and trying to inform the American people why it is necessary, rather than just sitting for hours listening to Republicans (as they'll say) defend the indefensible.
Warren and Sanders will say they'll be reviewing any transcripts, watching recorded testimony remotely, and obviously returning for any votes.
I'd expect them maybe to show up for the first and last days, but otherwise continue campaigning.
Maybe someone is in-the-know, but I find it hard to believe that the Booker, Klobuchar, Warren, and Sander’s campaigns aren’t crying foul at a minimum to Pelosi or at least in conversation with her office on what a chucklehead move this is.
