Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have purchased a nearly 7,000-square-foot home on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts for $11.75 million, according to a report.
The purchase price was recorded Wednesday with the local Registry of Deeds, the Vineyard Gazette reported.
The Obamas paid about half the original asking price for the property

I’ve not looked it up to verify this, but I’ve had a few folks tell me he inherited a pretty good sum, or gets some sort of payment from an estate.
Obviously don’t know all the particulars.

Sure, they'll "pay" 11 million and change (well, someone will, probably not them) but that property is worth at least mid 20's, maybe low 30's in millions.
Want to check? Go to Zillow and put in 4+ bedroom, 4+ bathroom, minimum 5000 sq. ft. (bammy's place is close to 7000). Now poke around at the couple dozen listings on Marth'a Vineyard that show up. Sure, you can get some "deals" on a few places in the single-digit millions. Note that these are not in great shape, and / or they are on city lots, shoulder to shoulder with neighbors. Note that ocean front lots, and lots at 4 or 9 acres get up into the 20 million range.
