Newsweek fires reporter who published inaccurate story on Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans
Washington Examiner ^ | November 30, 2019 | Mike Brest

The Newsweek reporter who published an inaccurate story about President Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans has been fired. The outlet's original story claimed the president only planned on tweeting and golfing during his holiday break, neglecting to mention his trip to Afghanistan.

Newsweek’s Jessica Kwong, whose Twitter handle identifies her as a political reporter "covering Trump administration and family," initially published the article Thursday morning, before the president's trip to Afghanistan was announced publicly. The story's initial headline was, “How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more.”

“Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner. "The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.”

Hours after the president's trip was announced, Newsweek edited Kwong's story and added a note at the bottom of it. The beginning of the story now focuses on the president's trip and his speech to the troops, while the new headline reads, “How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing — and surprising U.S. troops in Afghanistan.”

he note at the end of the story reads, "This story has been substantially updated and edited at 6:17 p.m. EST to reflect the president's surprise trip to Afghanistan. Additional reporting by James Crowley."

Kwong addressed the update on social media tweeting, "Trump headed to Afghanistan to surprise U.S. troops on Thanksgiving https://newsweek.com/trump-thanksgi… Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the president’s surprise visit to Afghanistan-an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot."

Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. both weighed in on the story on social media. "Fake news gonna fake!" Trump Jr. said in a tweet with a screen capture of Newsweek's original headline. The president added, "I thought Newsweek was out of business?"

Jessica Kwong did not respond to a request for comment.

If the media fired everyone who wrote a fake Trump story, there would be no media left.
And that would be a good thing.

You know how Trump could really rub their face in it? Invite Ms Kwong to the white house and be super gracious to her.

I wouldn't make too big a deal about Newsweak.

They won't be around much longer, regardless. Their issues are about as thin as a greeting card and are overpriced at $1.00 per issue.

They'll close their doors permanently sometime in the near future.

Newsweak was sold for $1 a couple of years ago.

The company is immune to lawsuits because it is worthless, and has no assets to lose in a civil judgment.

A homeless bum living under a bridge has a higher net worth than Newsweak.

Fire or not fire, it doesn’t change my view on that publication. I never read it and never will

I find it ironic that Newsweak fires a reporter for doing the same thing the magazine does, along with what the majority of the media does...reports without facts, and without double-checking those facts. This is the same magazine who spiked Mike Isikoff’s story on the Clinton-Lewinsky affair because they claim they didn’t have two verified sources. They don’t even follow the standards they set for themselves.

“The story has been corrected,”

Even the alleged “correction” was incorrect. They kept the part about golfing and just added the tip to it. It doesn’t seem possible. Wednesday after sunset he flew from FL to Andrews. After 10 p.m. he flew 13 hours to Afghanistan. He spent 3-1/2 hours at the base. Then he flew 13 hours back to the U.S.

Unless some sort of time warp is involved, or there no longer are only 24 hours in a day, I’m not seeing how he worked any golf into his schedule on Thanksgiving Day.

It actually should depend on whether the White House gave the reporter any information that led to his story or if he just made it up.

The White House wouldn’t have released information about the surprise trip for security reasons. So if asked, how would they have responded?

I’m guessing the reporter was assigned the story, couldn’t get anyone to talk and so made up the story. And if so, he should be fired. But if he had a valid source, then firing seems a bit harsh.
