The Newsweek reporter who published an inaccurate story about President Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans has been fired. The outlet's original story claimed the president only planned on tweeting and golfing during his holiday break, neglecting to mention his trip to Afghanistan.
Newsweeks Jessica Kwong, whose Twitter handle identifies her as a political reporter "covering Trump administration and family," initially published the article Thursday morning, before the president's trip to Afghanistan was announced publicly. The story's initial headline was, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more.
Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner. "The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.
Hours after the president's trip was announced, Newsweek edited Kwong's story and added a note at the bottom of it. The beginning of the story now focuses on the president's trip and his speech to the troops, while the new headline reads, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and surprising U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
he note at the end of the story reads, "This story has been substantially updated and edited at 6:17 p.m. EST to reflect the president's surprise trip to Afghanistan. Additional reporting by James Crowley."
Kwong addressed the update on social media tweeting, "Trump headed to Afghanistan to surprise U.S. troops on Thanksgiving https://newsweek.com/trump-thanksgi Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the presidents surprise visit to Afghanistan-an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot."
Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. both weighed in on the story on social media. "Fake news gonna fake!" Trump Jr. said in a tweet with a screen capture of Newsweek's original headline. The president added, "I thought Newsweek was out of business?"
Jessica Kwong did not respond to a request for comment.
It's about time decent people started standing up to evil.
MAGA Bump!
If Newsweek fires everyone who exclusively writes politically-motivated #FakeNews, they won’t have any real reporters left. In other words, no change.
Wowzer. An Asian female at that.
Lets give credit where credit is due. They took action...now lets see.
They keep that up, they wont have any reporters left. Maybe thats the plan, as opposed to laying them off.
winning 24/7
Well its not really her fault, after all Newsweek, like the rest of the commie media, dont really care about FACTS, they care about ONE thing and ONE thing only, hating Donald Trump..that is all nothing else
Perhaps an editor ought to share some blame. Do they even have editors anymore?
Newsweeks Jessica Kwong was fired for being wrong!
Let’s hope other Fake News outlets start doing the same thing.
Great. What about the other 21,497 one sided commies?
My thoughts also.
Too little too late, Newsweak. You are a permanent member of the Fake News Hall of Fame. Nothing will change that.
Not just Newsweek, how about the NYT/WaPo/ABC/MSNBC/CNN, etc., etc., etc.??? The entire mainstream media is so full of hate for President Trump and his family, associates, and supporters, that they will publish anything and everything negative, truth be damned.
CNN material.
Disinformation to keep the President safe will get you nowhere with Newsweek.
Whaaa...??? Whether intended or not, she maintained the cover. She did GOOD!
What she did wrong was that she fully exposed the open secret that the lamestream media simply regurgitates what its government sources/informants tell them.
Didn’t she have supervisors? I’d think for that much damage to the “brand” that the whole chain of command would be shown the door.
Yowzer! How long before the Asian female files a sexual and racial discrimination lawsuit against New-squeak?
