DC Comics deleted a poster for its new Batman comic after Chinese internet users piled on the company, accusing it of hiding a pro-democracy message in the image to support protesters in Hong Kong. The posterwhich showed Batman lobbing a flaming Molotov cocktail in the foreground, with the phrase, "the future is young" behind himwas to promote DC's new comic, "Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child." However, some commentators in mainland China claimed the poster had a secret agenda, and likened the superheros black mask and improvised grenade to the tools of the youthful activists who have taken over Hong Kongs streets to protest the citys government and its close ties to Beijing.

The usual.
This sounds like the Red China from Chairman Mao’s era.
Paranoid.
Maybe if Hong Kong manages to shake off their Chinese overlords, we can someday too.
In other words, the “normie” Chinese are so spooked by what’s happening in Hong Kong, they’re seeing “Russians”...I mean, anti-status quo monsters under their beds, in their closets, and in movie posters that have nothing whatsoever to do with what’s happening in Hong Kong.
Or to put it another way, those dreaded Hong Kong protestors are living rent free in their nightmares.
Found the image in question, if anyone’s curious. It’s an ad for the new Frank Miller series.

Gee, who knew, the ChiComs are Democrats.
Actually, it does sort of have a HK protest vibe.
Indeed.
You can see why everyone responded the ways they did, depending on where they live, how they believe, and who they agree with.
Thanks.
Looks like nobody remembers a movie entitled “Golden Child” with Eddy Murphy. The Reds hated it. Theme essentially about religious freedom and America.
I remember that movie. Wow that goes back a ways.
Good movie.
:)
Victor Wong was in that also.
From “Big trouble in Little China”.
Another outstanding film. :)
DC could convincingly go with the “lousy art” defense on why it was pulled.
Batman has always had a black mask, long before the Hong Kong demonstrations.
Well listen to Jack Burton and tell them “you want your money? The check is in the mail.”
Oh I completely agree. 100%.
But I have NEVER, ever, ever seen Batman, throw a Molotov cocktail before.
Have I just not been paying attention...
That movie stunk. Message or no message.
DC folded faster than Superman on laundry day...
The story is a sequel to "The Dark Knight Returns". The female Robin from the series has taken over for Bruce Wayne; the "Golden Child" of the title is Superman and Wonder Woman's son.
