Trump says U.S. will designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorists

WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview aired on Tuesday that he will designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorists over their role in drug and human trafficking.

"They will be designated ... I have been working on that for the last 90 days. You know, designation is not that easy, you have to go through a process, and we are well into that process," Trump said in an interview with conservative media personality Bill O'Reilly that aired on Tuesday.

Once a group is designated as a terrorist organization, under U.S. law it is illegal for people in the United States to knowingly offer support and its members cannot enter the country and may be deported. Financial institutions that become aware they have funds connected to the group must block the money and alert the U.S. Treasury Department.

Mexico's government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Mexico's foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said on Monday he did not expect the United States to make such a move.

Earlier this month, Trump, in a tweet, offered to help Mexico "wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth."

The proposal came after nine Americans were killed in an ambush in northern Mexico.

Mexican authorities said they may have been victims of mistaken identity amid confrontations among drug gangs in the area.

Lest anyone have any doubt about the extent of corruption in Mexico, he need only look up information on former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.

Mexican cartels are the Mexican government. That’s why the figureheads of the Mexican government are so upset about this.

Mexico has long been devolving into what is essentially a failed state. It no longer effective controls significant quantities of its own territory. The U.S. government should recognize this fact, and start taking appropriate actions. We need troops on the border actively defending it. Start shooting coyotes, and the problems on the border will change dramatically. Mexico is NOT a friend of the U.S. and they haven't been for a long time. They are attempting to export their poverty here, when that poverty is a direct result of the corruption and cronyism of their 'government'.

As I understand it in exchange for not making this declaration the Mexicans agreed to use their military to block the border which they have been doing to what extent l don’t know. Declaring them terrists opens a number of actions we can take which both compromises Mexico’s sovereignty and poses an embarrassment to the Mexican government. You are basically saying they cannot control these groups that operate in their border.

Well, in truth I don’t really know if the Mexican Government can control the cartels.

The question is the Mexican government adequately motivated to control the cartels? From my limited vantage point, the answer is no.

We’ll see
