I remember Johnson’s address clear as a bell. I thought my parents were going to fall off their chairs when LBJ stated: “Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president.”
They as well as much of the nation were flabbergasted.

The only angle I’d consider where I’d disagree is that they know they’re going to lose anyway and will setup an “old white male” to be the fall guy...as a premise that they can no longer win for D’s going forward.
