“For those who weren’t around to remember...Johnson didn’t run for reelection in ‘68 because he was deeply unpopular. He did Humphrey a favor by not endorsing him.”

I remember Johnson’s address clear as a bell. I thought my parents were going to fall off their chairs when LBJ stated: “Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president.”

They as well as much of the nation were flabbergasted.

Walter Cronkite often had bad Vietnam War related news for LBJ and the rest of the USA.

It was no surprise to me that LBJ didn’t try for a second term.

LBJ’s went from FDR level power to doghouse in less than four years.
