White House, Republicans discuss limiting impeachment trial to two weeks

WASHINGTON — A group of Republican senators and senior White House officials met privately Thursday to map out a strategy for a potential impeachment trial of President Trump, including proceedings in the Senate that could be limited to about two weeks, according to multiple officials familiar with the talks.

Senators Mike Lee, Ron Johnson, John Neely Kennedy, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Tom Cotton met with White House counsel Pat Cipollone, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, senior adviser Jared Kushner, and counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway, according to the officials, some of whom requested anonymity to discuss a private meeting.

The meeting was organized by White House legislative affairs director Eric Ueland, who was also in attendance along with advisers Pam Bondi and Tony Sayegh, recently hired to guide the White House’s impeachment messaging and strategy.

No final decisions were made on strategy for a trial that, if it happens, would come in January at the earliest. But one prominent scenario discussed, according to officials, was a trial that would last for roughly two weeks, which several Senate Republicans view as the ideal option because they believe it would be long enough to have credence without dragging on too long.

The scenario assumes the proceedings would end in acquittal in the GOP-controlled Senate.

‘‘I don’t want them to believe there’s an ability to dismiss the case before it’s heard,’’ Graham said Thursday following the meeting with Cipollone. ‘‘I think most everybody agreed, there’s not 51 votes to dismiss it before the managers get to call the case.’’

But even a two-week trial could run counter to what Trump has expressed privately. The president is ‘‘miserable’’ about the ongoing impeachment inquiry and has pushed to dismiss the proceedings right away, according to people familiar with Trump’s sentiments.

They are going to get obliterated with the FISA and everything else. Patriots are playing for keeps, no deals. I am watching all of these offensive actions going against the deep state and you can see that this is true. If the Dems impeach Trump the Patriots will still hit with the FISA scandal and they overwhelming evidence which has been gathered for years against these crooks. They will use this impeachment attempt as proof of treason/sedition and obstruction of justice against their own crimes (Remember AG has pronounced this as a coup)and Trump will win, Rank n file military loves him and would crush these vermin out in a heartbeat. Dems are not in a strong position at all.

“‘‘I think most everybody agreed, there’s not 51 votes to dismiss it before the managers get to call the case.’’”

... and therein lies the problem. This sham is not worthy of a Senate trial.

There is a possibility that the democrats in the House will withdraw from impeachment in order to avoid having the Senate cross-examine their witnesses, along with others they refused to call, such as the whistleblower, little adam schiff, etc.

And, it might move into areas that would make the democrats squirm, since they won’t be in control.

However, such aggressive tactics requires the Republicans to want to draw blood, a sentiment that is foreign to their make-up.

Keep all the Dem Senators in DC and unable to get out to campaign.

To be honest I think were better off with them campaigning.

This is where the Republicans start at the very beginning of the coup. Bring in the entire cabal and get them under oath. Lay out the whole ball of wax for the world to see once and for all. Two weeks my ass!!!

How about the Senate reviews the “articles” and renders them NULL AND VOID, because the do not meet the Constitutional Standard. Just because a wayward rogue crazed House sends them articles— they do not have to accept them and robot like move on to a waste of time trial.

This discussion is bullcrap.

Precisely— the prior STANDARDS are the Federal Rules of Evidence. Game over.

After the IG report, the Senate impeachment trial might really put the Coup on trial and might be the best way to expose the conspirators.

You believe anything Grahamnesty says?

He wants an abbreviated trial so his role in the dossier dissemination remains hidden.

Yes, either 2 minutes to dismiss or 10 months to drag every conspirator and their lackeys to the floor!

I’m with you - the longer it goes on the more truth will come out and the more swamp will be drained...Take it up to 15 Oct and then have the President release his tax returns to totally conflict and flummox them...

The HOR is not going to vote on or for impeachment. We have reached peak Schiff and peak impeachment, it will never make it to the Senate. Move on.
