‘It's My Job’ to Protect: Teachers Tell NBC Why They’re Learning to Shoot
mrcNEWSBUSTERS ^ | Nov. 19, 2019 | Nicholas Fondacaro

In an insightful segment during Monday’s NBC Nightly News, the network actually seemed to approach protecting schools from shooters with an open mind. Correspondent Gadi Schwartz joined a group of school teachers in Spanish Fort, Utah as they underwent firearms training with the local sheriff’s department, a new program they were running.

“Just days after yet another school shooting in America, tonight we want to show you teachers training for a life or death confrontation in the classroom,” anchor Lester Holt declared as the video portion on the segment began. “NBC's Gadi Schwartz on the internal struggle the teachers face.”

The first teacher Schwartz spoke with was Brenda Betteridge. After he noted her hands were still shaking from firing a pistol, she explained why it was so important for her and other teachers to learn how to shoot: “You see, a gunman with a young child. You know, this has got to count."

Schwartz questioned if she had it in her to stop a student she knew. Betteridge told him you had to think of everyone else:

SCHWARTZ: If there was a student that brought a gun to school and a student you possibly knew, would you be able to stop him?

BETTERIDGE: That's a really loaded question. It would be tough. It would be heartbreaking but just think of what -- how it would alter life if you didn't do something.

The program was the brainchild of Sheriff Mike Smith, who “started the program after deputies found unsecured guns on a campus during a recent lockdown. His new course, covering everything from gunshot first aid, de-escalation, self-defense, and basic tactics.”

In a conversation with Smith, Schwartz shared concerns about teacher firearms being accidentally discharged. Sheriff Smith spelled out the need to teachers to be armed:

SCHWARTZ: One of the fears has to be there is going to be an accidental discharge in the school, right?

SMITH: It could happen. But the guns are in the school.

SCHWARTZ: They’re already there.

SMITH: They’re there. If we're going to do it, we need to help them prepare for it.

“Those parents send those kids to school expecting that they’re going to be kept safe,” fourth grade teacher Jeff Mortensen told Schwartz. “Right now, it's on the teachers. It's my job. They look to me as the person who’s going to keep them safe.”

LESTER HOLT: Just days after yet another school shooting in America, tonight we want to show you teachers training for a life or death confrontation in the classroom. NBC's Gadi Schwartz on the internal struggle the teachers face.

[Cuts to video]

GADI SCHWARTZ: At a sheriff department training center in Utah, schoolteachers are being taught how to shoot to kill an active shooter. And around a corner, Brenda Betteridge has just spotted her target.

BRENDA BETTERIDGE: Can I shoot this?

SHERIFF MIKE SMITH: Yeah. [Gunshot] One more. Put it in the head. [Gunshot]. Good.

SCHWARTZ: You're shaking a little bit.

BETTERIDGE: Yeah, still. You see, a gunman with a young child. You know, this has got to count.

SCHWARTZ: If there was a student that brought a gun to school and a student you possibly knew, would you be able to stop him?

BETTERIDGE: That's a really loaded question. It would be tough. It would be heartbreaking but just think of what -- how it would alter life if you didn't do something.

SCHWARTZ: So far, nine states including Utah allow guns in schools as long as they are secured and concealed.

One of the fears has to be there is going to be an accidental discharge in the school, right?

SMITH: It could happen. But the guns are in the school.

SCHWARTZ: They’re already there.

SMITH: They’re there. If we're going to do it, we need to help them prepare for it.

SCHWARTZ: Sheriff Mike Smith started the program after deputies found unsecured guns on a campus during a recent lockdown. His new course, covering everything from gunshot first aid, de-escalation, self-defense, and basic tactics.

Are you at all worried about a kid possibly getting your gun at school?

JEFF MORTENSEN (4th-grade teacher): No. It would be on my person at all times secure and concealed.

SCHWARTZ: The country is going to be asking why?

MORTENSEN: Those parents send those kids to school expecting that they’re going to be kept safe. Right now, it's on the teachers. It's my job. They look to me as the person who’s going to keep them safe.

SCHWARTZ: Gadi Schwartz, NBC News, Spanish Fort, Utah.

Has there EVER been an "accidental discharge" by an SRO or armed teacher in a school setting?

I've never heard of one.

The reason is that RSOs only draw their weapon WHEN THERE IS A PERCEIVED THREAT!!!!

Ya know, you can buy hand guns that simply cannot be discharged by dropping or other impact.

It’s all we have.

That cartoon reminds me of the MAD Magazine cartoons of “Bonnie and Clyde” style bank robbers in Foreign countries fifty two years ago. OMG! Has it been that long! I’m OLD!

There was one case in GA (last year?). Don't recall details, someone will for me...teacher did somehow fire "accidentally" when nobody else was in the room. Doesn't work there any more AFAIK.

Everybuddy here`n knows dang wel that them thar guns shoot all by themselves. So we`uns done put a big boulder on top of the cistern just in case them guns trys to shoot their way out. yupyupyup.

Are you sure? I've heard/read of cocked revolvers going off it they hit the ground wrong.

True. Don’t buy or use those as a modestly trained civilian.

There ARE numerous low cost revolvers that simply cannot be caused to fire by dropping or striking them. Any decent gun store can show you those.

Also modern well designed semi-automatic hand guns CANNOT be caused to fire by dropping or striking them.

Our EDC (every day carry) full size hand guns are the Springfield XDS, because they CANNOT fire unless you grip the stock AND pull trigger. Also chosen because they have no safety to fiddle with or remember and you can safely carry the gun with a round chambered and the gun cocked.

Gun education is key to gun safety.

True. I have a SIG 226, and 229, both have a block between the pin and primer that is removed by the action of pulling the trigger. I think you'd have a pretty hard time getting it to fire by dropping it.

Good choice. Nice firearm.

Nice. My 226 and 229 are 'Elites'. Love the stainless frame and slide. Got tired of black guns. They are the best shooters I have. Better than the 225 that I've had for about 20 years or so.
