From today easyJet will be the first major airline to offset the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights on behalf of all of its customers
easyJet and Airbus sign hybrid-electric aircraft research agreement which will analyse the opportunities and challenges surrounding hybrid and electric aircraft
The airline will continue to support the long-term reinvention of aviation through new technology
easyJet, Europes leading airline, has today announced that it will become the worlds first major airline to operate net-zero carbon flights across its whole network. The airline will achieve this goal by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights, starting today.
easyJet will undertake carbon offsetting through schemes accredited by two of the highest verification standards, Gold Standard and VCS. They will include forestry, renewable and community based projects.
Carbon offsetting is only an interim measure while new technologies are developed, so the airline will continue to support innovative technology, including the development of hybrid and electric planes, working with others across the industry to reinvent and de-carbonise aviation over the long-term. The aim will be for easyJet to reduce the amount of carbon offsetting undertaken as new technologies emerge.
As part of this goal, we have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus related to a joint research project on hybrid and electric aircraft. The MoU is an important step towards furthering the industrys understanding of the operational and infrastructure opportunities and challenges of plug-in hybrid and full electric aircraft.
easyJet and Airbus will cooperate on three distinct work packages set to define the impacts and the requirements necessary for the large-scale introduction of next generation sustainable aircraft on infrastructure and every-day commercial aircraft operations.

Strong Delusion.
CO2 is not a greenhouse gas. The opposite actually.
But let’s say it is. And humans are increasing the amount in the atmosphere. (we will ignore the fact that one volcano puts out more CO2 than all human activity - ever).
The only way to deal with it, according to their own models, would be to ‘euthanize’ 95% of the world population. Anything less is just nibbling at the margins.
What a joke.
Who wants to be lightly fueled over the Atlantic ocean at 30 thousand feet?
Speaking of Monty Python, FReepers should pool together and buy huge tracts of land and sell tree planting services to companies like this. They pay and we benefit.
LOL
Forestry?! Pffffft! If it’s anything like our USFS ran national forests they’ll go up in smoke every summer from horrible management practices!
This is WZAZ in Chicago, where disco lives forever...
They still have to compete with AOC’s choo-choo’s.
Easy. Everyone who buys an easyJet ticket will be forced to spend an additional $100 or more to purchase a carbon credit as an offset. Bingo!
And AlGore will be happy to take your money to build a larger house.
“easyJet will undertake carbon offsetting through schemes”
“Schemes” is right! Guess who is getting “schemed” here? Easyjet’s customers who get to pay higher fares simply for the smug satisfaction of thinking they are saving the planet.
The best part would be: they only pay us to plant them. Make sure there’s nothing in the contract that says we can’t cut them down and sell the lumber in a few years.
I can imagine a couple of passenger seating arrangements.
One would involve galley slave technology. Another would be based on bicycle seats and pedals. No more flight attendants. They would replaced by goons with lasers. Only white males would be allowed to fly. They would be connected to a system which could collect their co2.
Whoa! I gotta get more coffee! Feel free to express your ideas.
They should hire Telsa engineers.
“Wing flapping technology”. Why didn’t I think of that?
Lol. How about the videos of the slaves rowing in tandem. In the modern version, people would still be rowing to flap the wings of the airplane.

“Net” means there’s still carbon but they can play the game by taking the perk points off. How much carbon is produced making the planes? Will the terminal be air conditioned and heated? Will they eliminate the TSA due to so many extra employees exhaling? Will the flight crew be naked because the making of uniforms produce carbon? How much carbon is produced in making electricity to charge the batteries?
Wait, I thought batteries were very bad things.
Today’s self-virtuous marketing is tomorrow’s business crushing government mandated policy. I give them a Monty Python group “yayyyy”.
95%, hmm. Univ. of TX professor Eric Pianka has long lectured his students that 95% of the human race needs to be killed off with airborne Ebola.
