In the latest step toward the rebirth of San Franciscos Presidio from an aging former Army base to a bright light of Americas national park system, crews are set to break ground Thursday on a project to build a new 14-acre public park on top of two freeway tunnels near the Golden Gate Bridge.
When finished in 2021, the unusual project, called Tunnel Tops, will link Crissy Field, on San Franciscos waterfront, to the Presidios Main Post, parade grounds and visitors center. That connection was severed more than 80 years ago when the road to and from the Golden Gate Bridge, formerly known as Doyle Drive, split the landscape in half.
The new park, roughly the size of 10 football fields, will stretch over the top of the roadway, and be free to the public. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, it will include trails, gardens, a campfire circle, community plaza, youth education center, and thousands of native plants, trees and overlooks across San Francisco Bay.
Its not often you get to create new parkland in a highly urban environment, said Jon Jarvis, who approved the project as director of the National Park Service from 2009 to 2017. This is an extraordinary opportunity.
The projects cost is estimated at about $110 million. It will be funded largely by the private donations raised by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, a non-profit group based in San Francisco.
Work is being overseen the Presdio Trust, a federal agency created by Congress after the Army base closed in 1994 and the land was transferred to the National Park Service. The Trust runs most of the Presidio, and is responsible for restoring its historic buildings and keeping the site financially self-sufficient through rents and other revenues.

Please just leave it alone.
Would be up wonderful idea, except it will be immediately filled with bums, feces, needles, and no decent citizen would ever be able to go there in any kind of safety.
Look! A new toilet.
For what they’re spending for the park’s boondoggle, they could build a decent escape-proof asylum-institution to house every mentally-ill homeless pooper in the downtown area, and then clean-up the city.
PING.
Yay! More places for the bums to poop! *SHUDDER*
So glad I got to see 99% of America and Europe when it was STILL ‘America’ and ‘Europe.’
Never going overseas again. Never leaving the farm until they carry me out feet first! :)
It will look very nice. San Franciscans are all about aesthetics, poopy sidewalks not withstanding.
Look! A new toilet.

What a waste! This is California...we dont need no stinkin toilets.
Ten years ago I was on an overnight ride thru San Francisco when I happened into the Presidio at first light and saw a sleepy Coyote eyeballing the passing scooters.
Coyotes in SF?...who would have thought.
err nice article... wtf is a cubic ton of dirt.
Like a $9 dollar bill divided by $3’s?
Just add rainbow...

Woohoo=- a brand new park to poop in
They're all over the place. Can't shoot them, even pulling out a gun will get you jail time or shot by cops. Protected species. I'm in South San Francisco, and coyotes are spotted every night on streets in my neighborhood, including my own. Some neighbors are complaining about half-eaten cat carcasses on their lawns. Coyotes go up and down the peninsula coastal regions to/from San Francisco's Presidio and Golden Gate Park.
Soon to be the worlds largest, gender-neutral, open-air, latrine.
To all my Army friends who served at the Presidio & Letterman Army Med Center, I feel your pain, hand salute to all those who served there & at Naval Hospital Oakland, 2 of the greatest teaching Hospitals the Military ever had! They were the welcome home centers for the Pacific Theater, Korea, & Viet Nam. Taps.
Yep, I must agree. This new urban parkland will be despoiled when the homeless and druggies move in.
Cool before/after graphic.
Seems like a colossal waste of money, though.
