Two hurt when pirates attack Italian ship in Gulf of Mexico, officials say

Two crew members on an Italian-flagged ship were injured when the vessel was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico, the Mexican navy said Tuesday.

One crew member aboard the "Remas" had a bullet wound and the other suffered a concussion, officials told Reuters.

According to a link in the article, this is a growing problem in the region. The pirates are Mexican fishermen who have branched out into other endeavors, so to speak.

I read an article about that awhile back. The author was discussing pirate attacks in the Indian Ocean. He said that the ports are the problem. Ports almost everywhere have rules against any weapons being on a merchant ship.

So an armed merchant ship would be denied entry into those ports.

That’s a good idea, and I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. But it sure would be a lot easier if governments would just man up and let merchant ships arm themselves if they want to.

Just make a rule saying all weapons must be stowed securely below before entering the port.
