Heading into the weekend we were anticipating a top ten that would deliver around $110 million, as it turns out the top ten currently falls just short of a combined $100 million as Lionsgate's Midway delivered a surprise #1 finish, topping WB's Doctor Sleep, which slipped to second and well below expectations.

At the top of the weekend box office is Lionsgate's Midway, finishing ahead of expectations with an estimated $17.5 million from 3,242 locations. The film also scored an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences and should expect a strong performance over Veteran's Day tomorrow that should push the film's four-day gross over $20 million.

I am into the concept of the telling of the story, and using CGI in a good and constructive way that makes it...entertainment, and not brainwashing, then I can be in.
I am hopeful for it.
I share your feelings on an imperfect America back then that was light years in front of what we have today. America was imperfect in June 1942, and we were under a cloud of war, but there was common (and I do mean "common") sense in many areas where an idiotic or nonsensical view would be seen as such by people of radically different views in other areas.
There was still "common ground" between people who disagreed on many issues. I don't feel that we have that today.
Midway 2019 also wasn’t expected to be #1 — so it’s great to see the pathetic far left be disappointed that a movie that extols American exceptionalism and heroism and determination is nation’s #1 movie.

Too bad. That was the key to the whole victory. There were many elements but it could have been a surprise attack by the Japanese if not for that ploy.
I just saw a commercial for a WWI movie called 1917. It looks pretty good from the trailer but I’ll have to look into it to find out. I’m watching Hacksaw Ridge right now.

There’s already rumors of an extended/director’s cut that approaches 3 hours with a lot of the stuff that had to be cut for time restored. They couldn’t get away with a movie that long in theaters with the current situation, alas.

It’s called a Canary Trap. Signals Intelligence Command was reading some of the Japanese codes, such as JN-25, and using radio traffic analysis. They were only reading about 20% of that. They could tell the the Imperial Fleet was going to attack somewhere, that the Japanese were calling AF and somewhere else, that they were calling AL. SIC had to figure out which was what.

All wounded Japanese rescued at sea at Midway carried in their heads dangerous info in their heads regarding the depth of their Midway Defeat.
They all got hospitalized in the same place, the better to keep the Midway Defeat a secret, as nearly as was possible.
They were not officially interned, but....yeah, uh...they were.
The Japanese Leadership absolutely wanted to keep a lid on that.
In Japan, there were basically just rumors.
There were five. The fifth was the Zuiho. It approached from the Southwest and was part of the main invasion force.

FYI, per their writings at the time and since, the real life ‘academy grads’ *weren’t* sure they were ready to lead. The movie is being accurate. I know at least a couple of the aviators were worried about their ‘mojo’ or so they claimed in their memoirs.
IMHO, this depiction is more realistic than earlier “RAH RAH WE’RE ALL HEROES AND WE GO TO CRUSH THE JAPS RAH” characterization. Certainly thre were many that were like that but most were average men with average fears who pressed on anyway.

The last war movie I watched that I payed the price of a movie ticket for was “USS Indianapolis-Men of Courage”. Normally, I don’t go out of my way to see war movies from Hollywood (The last exception before that being “American Sniper” which I found very good)
Now, I should have been wary, given Nicholas Cage played the leading role in that movie, and he is a Libtard extraordinare, but...I couldn’t help it.
I have been interested in the plight of the USS Indianapolis and her crew, even before the movie “Jaws”, and I was able to spend several hours one day with one of the highest ranking survivors. I felt the pulse of history there.
So, when the movie came out, you couldn’t rent it online, so I bought it. Big mistake. It was the stupidest, most politically correct Hollywoodized war movie...I couldn’t watch more than the first 15 minutes. I couldn’t even watch it past the Indianapolis leaving port to go to sea, it was that bad.
Another one I watched that actually enraged me was the movie “The Monuments Men” some years back. What a story (I read the book) that would have been a treasure for many Americans to see this aspect of our country, and...Hollywood turned it into a fricking cartoon, and a vehicle for the scumbag George Clooney to wear aviator shades in uniform. It still pisses me off, they took a GREAT story and destroyed it utterly.
So I am somewhat gratified to hear others on a site like FR discuss it in reasonable terms.
Personally, I have been waiting for a movie on a momentous WWII naval battle that had good CGI...this would fit the bill.
I hold out hope for a movie someday “The Battle of Leyte Gulf”...there is a lot to work with there. With good CGI, it would be astonishingly good, as long as they tell the story.
Yes, they laughed, supported each other, had doubts about whether they would survive, and cried over the loss of fellow servicemen. But I dont think the men of greatest generation ever 'whined' or complained like the soyboys of today (as portrayed by Hollywood and by liberals) are expected too. Drama queens would get no slack or respect in real life.
