Following the Virginia election debacle last Tuesday, Republican voters in the Old Dominion might feel tempted to despair of dreaming about a red Virginia ever again. Many seem disposed to wait out President Trumps term under the impression that Republicans cannot win under Trump. However, the Virginia Republican Party failed to field viable candidates, use the political resources available to them, or articulate any sort of stance on electoral issues. Democrats did not win Virginia, nor did a massive turn in national sentiment doom the Republican Party; the Virginia State GOP ruined its own chances.
Perhaps most startling, the Virginia Republican Party failed to run candidates in ten out of forty (the 1st, 2nd, 18th, 29th, 30th, 31st, 34th, 35th, 36th, and 37th), fully one-quarter of Virginia senatorial races. In contrast, the Democrats contested all races but one, the 23rd district. A party cannot win elections without candidates.
The Republican Party also failed to contest twenty-three out of one hundred delegate races (the 11th, 32nd, 35th, 36th, 37th, 38th, 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th, 53rd, 57th, 67th, 69th, 70th, 74th, 77th, 79th, 86th, 89th, 90th, 92nd, and 95th districts), again about one-fourth. While the Republican Party lost nearly a quarter of the House of Delegates seats by default, the Democrats contested all but seven races (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 17th, 19th, and 78th districts).
It also looks like the Republicans did not contest races in certain districts with unfavorable minority majority demographics. That sort of worn-out, defeatist thinking has to stop. The Republicans ran Darrell H. D.J. Jordan Jr. in the 31st Delegate district and Garrison R. Coward in the 68th Delegate district. Both are great candidates and also minorities. Jordan lost by just six points (1,500 votes). Coward lost by ten points (3,900 votes). Jordan should have won

I personally know a guy who ran for Virginia State Senate as a Republican. He got into the race because he was horrified by Northam’s comments about post-birth abortion. A more decent, salt-of-the-earth guy you could not hope to meet.
He got blown out by nearly ten points. But Virginians did elect a Democrat Senator who had once gone to jail on a morals charge.
Virginians deserve whatever happens to them at this point IMHO.
Reason is their proximity to a ‘sickness’ called DCitis ?
The Republicans are the Democrats and vice versa. That is why nothing has happened. Yet. Trump is bringing sun light. Trump still has cards to play, and still could call up millions of armed Deplorables with a tweet. Not worried.
Easy. Because the Ed Gillespie types in the state party allowed a ton of dems to run unopposed.
Probably intentional, like Ryan getting his minions to retire to hand the US House to the dems.
Sounds like the Virginia GOP is as useless and incompetent as the NY GOP.
NY GOP: “Let pick another loser to run this year!”
NY GOP person2 : “OK”
A concerted effort has to be made to reach African-American voters. It must be publicized how the Democrats situate their genocidal abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods. It must also be made clear how the Democrats herd minority children into union controlled, horrible schools and perpetuate ignorance and failure. Also must not be afraid to criticize the phony black preachers who take huge bribes from the Democrats to sell out their own people. Say what is necessary and fight the Democrats with Trump style boldness or slither away.
The NY GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NY Democrat party.
Think The Globetrotters against the Generals (now defunct)
Reality bites. If I were a person with zeal for political office, there’s no way I’d waste time and money running for an office where the deck is so seriously stacked against me as it is in most of the population centers of VA. The demographic there has completely flipped. So if one conservative soul should brave those odds, it would be admirably courageous, but quixotic.
Residents there represent a morphing from the most stalwart exponents of states’ rights into a miasma of bureaucrats, ethnics, college towns, social services and even military/industrial bureaucrats.
The GOP establishment does nothing, loses, and blames it on Trump’s “unlikability.”
However, the Virginia Republican PartyCorrected.failedrefused to field viable candidates
Why would the GOP not run someone? I think that VA is lost, but they should have run someone.
I think a major reason is the way New York State is violating the spirit of double jeopardy by going after Trump on taxes and various other issues.
So many Swampmonsters live in VA that there’s no way they are going to allow the state to be in the hands of Republicans who might do the same to them.
It looks like the “Never-Trumper” republicans control the Virginia GOP. And they are waiting for 2024 - when it will be too late.
The election that Trump ran in, he won.
He beat Hillary, who EVERYONE was expecting to win.
Trump is a winner.
The GOP is every bit as lame, as they have been for the last 20 years.
Trump, is the only winning thing about the GOP right now.
I’ve said since the turn of the century that in a democracy, you not only get the government you want. You get the government you deserve.
I literally see the US as 50 separate countries kept in check by an overarching common constitution. What that means is that, as a Kentuckian, when I see crazy stuff happening in Virginia or California, I’m like an Irishman seeing crazy stuff in Germany or France. Not my country.
It also speaks to why I moved from my longtime home, Seattle, to KY 8 years ago. And it changed my life in so many good ways.
Any VA election autopsy that doesn’t include a discussion of the demographic effects of immigration (esp. legal, since those are the ones who actually vote) is simply trying to con you.
It also looks like the Republicans did not contest races in certain districts with unfavorable minority majority demographics. That sort of worn-out, defeatist thinking has to stop.
No doubt it will stop when Virginia is California upon the Atlantic.
The demographic there has completely flipped.
Yes. In my district in NOVA, the Dim candidate for Delegate ran unopposed. The Dim running for State Senator got 70% of the vote.
I read somewhere that GOP candidates collectively got more voters than Democrat candidates on Election Day in Virginia, and that the now-Democratic control of the legislature is really just a function of how the districts are arranged.
