New Jersey Republicans defied expectations Tuesday night and won key battleground races in South Jersey.
The biggest surprises of the night came in South Jerseys battleground districts, where Democrats were looking to build on their momentum from the 2018 midterm elections and make gains in areas that historically leaned conservative.
In District 1, State Sen. Bob Andrzejczak lost his reelection bid Tuesday to Republican challenger Mike Testa in one of the key races in South Jersey.
The results in the 8th were a setback for Democrats who turned the district increasingly blue in the Trump era.
Good for NJ!
South NJ is conservative. Its like upstate NY.
Races were nationalized.
They have no idea how big the RED WAVE is going to be? The libs heads are going to explode.
Van Drew and Kim are done next year.
Kinda. It looks like the Dems still control things by a large margin
I believe these races (4 Assembly and 1 Senate pickups) were in Jeff Van Drew’s congressional district - Van Drew was one of the two Dems in the House to vote against the loony impeachment authorization.
The Republican Party in New Jersey is practically non-existent as a political force. It's basically about as serious and effective as the board of directors for a local Elks club.
Other seats were lost to Dems in NJ. It’s becoming more liberal.
Who can trust New Jersey? They elected Ralph Machio to be the Karate Kid
North NJ which is the populous part of the state is all Blue. Not gonna change in my lifetime.
Northwestern Jersey is also conservative. NJ gets a bad rap.
Very true. But there are still pockets of NJ that are quite conservative (Trump carried 8 out of 21 counties which were in South Jersey and NW Jersey). The problem is the cities which soak up money from the burbs and rural areas and have the voting power.
Rs were not supposed to gain any of the NJ seats, one report in advance of the election said they would lose a few more. So, this is a nice change, four more in the Assembly takes out three incumbent Dems and brings Rs to 30 out of 80 and one more senate seat, also held by an incumbent D, which brings it to 25-15. Totally unexpected.

...
The phony witch hunt era.
The Trump era is defined by winning.
This isn't an anomaly. Forget about the cities. The New Jersey suburbs are becoming a hotbed of leftist politics due to two trends:
1. Democrats moving here from New York City and Philadelphia.
2. Republicans who were born and raised here moving to places like North Carolina, Florida and Texas -- usually when their employers move out of the state and take their jobs with them.
I've traveled all over North America, and I can tell you that you'd be hard-pressed to find a dumber group of voters than suburban women in New Jersey.
Hopefully, Malinowski too.
Where do you et the idea that upstate NY is conservative? If you look at a population weighted election map of upstate NY you can see that the bulk of the population is in the cities Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Ithaca, etc and those are solid blue. Meaning that people vote and although the least populated areas voted Republican and make the map area look largely red, this is an illusion due to the fact that the cities go Democrat and don't have the same geographic area. Unfortunately trees, rocks and black flies don't vote.
