New York City on Tuesday became the latest and largest city in the nation to adopt ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to rank their top five candidates based on preference.
New Yorkers overwhelmingly approved Ballot Question 1 by a roughly 73 to 17 percent margin, with just over 77 percent of precincts reporting.
The ballots passage will allow the citys voters to begin using ranked-choice voting in local primary and special elections starting in 2021.
The method allows voters to rank their top five candidates in order of preference rather than picking just one contender. If a candidate wins an outright majority in first-place rankings, that person wins. However, if nobody wins a majority in the first round, the candidate in last place is eliminated and voters who ranked that candidate first have their votes shifted to the one they ranked second. The process goes on until a single candidate gets a majority of first-place votes.
Opponents say ranked-choice voting unnecessarily complicates elections, though proponents of the system have claimed that it forces candidates to appeal to a larger swath of voters and allows people wider latitude to consider every contender in a race.
Ranked Choice Voting is an exciting step forward for democracy and increasing voter choice. Low voter turnout, negative campaigns, a lack of diversity among candidates, and expensive runoff elections with even lower participation rates have plagued municipal elections, said Tousif Ahsan, civic engagement coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group.

In most general elections, I don’t find more than 2 candidate worth my consideration.
The better for communists to win.
We have this crap in Maine for federal elections.
Cost the GOP House incumbent (Congressman Bruce Poliquin) his House seat in November 2018.
I believe in Maine, a Republican who received the most votes, but not the majority, lost the election using this system.

Portland Maine’s very liberal mayor, Ethan Strimling has lost reelection via rank choice, final results not in but he conceded about 10 pm. We are waiting for the final tabulation to confirm the first place finisher finished first. Somehow Portland will end up with the best option for mayor.
Just as I posted it was confirmed that Kate Synder will be our new Mayor. She was the least liberal of all 4 of our candidates.
This sounds kind of the the electoral college system Democrats hate because it’s not democratic and it doesn’t reward the winner of the popular vote.
So true.
The propositions are even EASIER. They all ask for MORE and MORE money and then do NOTHING with it. So I vote NO on all the propositions except for when the money is for the police and fire departments.
Yes. Second District Congressman Bruce Poliquin received 2,500 more votes but lost to democrat Jared Golden in Nov. 2018.
Neither the GOP guy or the dem challenger received 50.1% of the vote, so they counted the second choice of the voters who cast their initial vote for the two minor candidates on the ballot, liberals Tiffany Bond, who didn’t even live in the 2nd ditrict district, and William Hoar.
These two minor candidates combined received 8% of the vote. Most of their voters chose democrat Jared Golden as their second choice, and Golden was declared the winner.
Most people, such as myself, voted for only one person.
All the PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) were started by Ralph Nader. Non-partisan my ass.

They might as well be. Republics seem to side with Democrat initiatives. They see it as 'reaching across the isle and in the sprite of compromise'.
That gets at what I was wondering: what if you don’t want to vote for anyone after your first choice?
Right, I don’t only want to not vote for the rest, I want to vote AGAINST all of the rest...
Ranked Fraud Voting
Moving second or fifth rank to first is fraud.
Plurality majority already won the election.
Those voters are disenfranchized.
Choice of hanging tree should be on the ballot.
Always write in your choice 5 as Hanging Tree or Fraud Vote.
Calculated way to keep Communist fringe candidates in the running and winning when the disguised Communist bosses directly instruct voters to do target voting for their one or two candidates. Everyone else’s vote is diluted by random choice. Targeted voting works well, since the rest of the votes are scattered.
