All privately owned diesel vehicles will be barred from entering the proposed city centre clean air zone for eight hours a day.
Mayor Marvin Rees saying they had a "moral, ecological and legal duty" to cut pollution
Drivers breaking the ban will be fined.
Diesel-powered commercial vehicles like buses, taxis and heavy goods vehicles will also face restrictions but efforts will be made to minimise disruption.
"at least 300 people a year are dying because of air pollution".
The decision was not universally popular, with councillors expressing concerns over whether it would become harder to get to hospital.

21st Century version of “The Bristol Stomp”.
The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol
When they do the Bristol Stomp
Really somethin when they join in jumpin
When they do the Bristol Stomp...
Or maybe not.
Diesel is MUCH cleaner than gasoline. This makes no sense.
Song refers to Bristol, PA. Hard working, fun loving people there.
If you want it to make sense, just.... follow the money.
Bingo!
No, it isn’t.
300 people die of air pollution? I know I’m a teen, but air pollution kills only Bristol’s citizens?
“”””Diesel is MUCH cleaner than gasoline. This makes no sense.””””
Not really. Burning diesel is obviously dirtier and cancerogenous.
It is greener overall because diesel engines by far more efficient. But you better don’t get exposed to exhaust.
And thousands are dying of lead poisoning in our major cities every year...........
City dwellers in the UK will be paying more for Food due to higher transportation costs from loss of diesel. But their leaders wont miss any food.
re: “Not really. Burning diesel is obviously dirtier and cancerogenous.”
YET, which engine type REQUIRES a catalytic converter?
Maybe you have imagery of a truck intentionally ‘rolling coal’?
I am actually not against diesels but fact are fact.
re: “I am actually not against diesels but fact are fact.”
Diesels operate with an excess of air - OXYGEN - for combustion; fact.
Gasoline engines throttle-down the air or air/fuel mixture, and TOO LEAN a mixture and “ignition’ will not occur OR too lean damages valves (notably, the exhaust valve I think.)
Cite an industry paper university study or something; lets move this discussion along ...
I've walked through the busy streets of London, where every one of those countless black taxis (and a large percentage of the remaining vehicles) run on diesel. I was expecting to be awash in diesel exhaust fumes, but only caught a small whiff once or twice - and never saw any sooty exhaust smoke. Modern automotive light Diesel engines are extremely clean-running and exhaust particulate filters do work. The dust in the streets from brake pad and tire wear is probably worse for you from a health standpoint.
NorseViking believes that stuff?
What about simple road dust? Maybe the smart guys doing the study didn’t control for road dust? How about pollen?
Do a little test: Take a REALLY strong flashlight out at night and shine it STRAIGHT UP - what do you see moving through the beam?
