On October 29, 1969, the internet era began as UCLA Computer Science Professor Len Kleinrock sent the first message on ARPANET, a network of computers that would evolve to become the internet.
Five decades later, and 30 years since the World Wide Web brought the internet into the mainstream, global digital connectivity has fundamentally changed our world.
Marking the anniversary, our founder and inventor of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, said:
Its astonishing to think the internet is already half a century old. But its birthday is not altogether a happy one. The internet and the World Wide Web it enabled have changed our lives for the better and have the power to transform millions more in the future. But increasingly were seeing that power for good being subverted, whether by scammers, people spreading hatred or vested interests threatening democracy.
A year ago, I called for a new Contract for the Web, bringing together governments, companies and citizen groups to come up with a clear plan of action to protect the web as a force for good. In a months time that plan will be ready. This birthday must mark the moment we take on the fight for the web we want.
We urgently need an ambitious, coordinated effort to tackle the threats facing the internet and the web, and make sure that everyone is able to access the benefits of digital technology. Next month, well publish the Contract for the Web a plan created by experts and individuals from across the world to make sure our online world is safe, empowering and genuinely for everyone.
It's all for the "Force of Good".
1969 was quite a year
I was born on July 9 the day they took off for the moon on the Apollo 11 mission
They landed and planning to flag on July 20
Apparently the Internet was invented
ask Al gore about that
Led Zeppelin was touring and tearing up the United States of America
Music was it an absolute zenith before the disco era of the 1970s which of course wasnt all bad
Of course you can forget Woodstock?
OTOH,the internet has made the lives of terrorists and perverts easier....
There are too many pluses...and minuses...for me to list.
Who is this "we" they speak of?
And define "good".
"Good" in China means you do what your government tells you to do.
I fear that his "contract" is not going to be "good" at all.
Our U.S. Constitution could be helpful to them , but they probably don't want the peasants getting ideas about freedom or anything like that.
Google a guy named “Brad Huddleston.” Watch some of his videos about internet and smartphone addiction and what they do to you. The tech industry is purposely designing internet websites, smartphones and apps to be increasingly addictive. Their programs are designed by the same folks who develop gambling machines for Las Vegas. There’s a science to internet addiction, it’s intentional. Then of course there is the fact they are all spying on you and gathering all of your information.
Huddleston partly comes at this from a Christians perspective, but don’t let that be a turnoff from his main message that what is going on now is dangerous and harmful.
Uh, "the internet" is the reason we know it is fake. "The Internet" broke the monopoly of the ownership of the airwaves by the "big media" due to limited bandwidth.
In the end the creative forces on the Internet are always going to be five steps ahead of the censorship losers Like are in heavy employment in China and Iran
The censors have to sit around all
Day staring at screens trying to find what other people are saying
The others who have things to say can just come off with whatever is coming out of their mind
Its a much harder game for the first rather than the second
Interesting point.
AI and alogarithms will speed the process.
“...with a clear plan of action to protect the web as a force for good. In a months time that plan will be ready.”
First, of course, is to censor completely MAGA.
Apollo 11 took off on July 16, not July 9.
I remember, I was ten years old at the time. One month before the launch, my Dad took me to Cape Canaveral to see the rocket on the launching pad.
Back in the 1970s, it took forever to print those pictures... on a text printer that you watched building the picture line by line with symbols and characters. But it was exciting stuff. Best thing was upgrading from 110 BAUD to 300 BAUD modems, and then 1200 BAUD really sped things along.
I agree with Jim.
I was born in ‘68.
Not sure how long printers have been around and was there ANY kind of public internet access before the mid 90s?
NO IDEA what BAUD is. Sorry :)
1 baud equals 1 bit per second. Early form of measurement for transmission speed calculations.
1200??!!?!
They have terabits now!!!!!!!!
WWW was invented, I believe, in 1994.
Prior to that there was usenet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet) and also Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) which were forums with no graphics.
Email began in the early 1970s but didn’t takeoff until later.
Windows 95 (released in 1995) was the first really popular operating system built around Graphical User Interface. Before that it was all just text on a screen, but people still did a lot with networks.
Yep to me Windows 95 was probably the most significant leap in making the internet as we know it today. It’s no coincidence that this website began shortly after it had been released.
wow. Thanks for the info
