Russia has unveiled a new combat icebreaker vessel in St. Petersburg on Friday which it says will help defend its national interests in the Arctic, the state-run TASS news agency reported.
The launch of the Ivan Papanin comes amid Russias rapid military and economic development in its strategic Arctic region. Earlier this month, over 12,000 troops took part in nuclear war drills across Russias Arctic. Russia has also said it obtained new data that supports its territorial claims in the Arctic. According to Viktor Cherkov, an admiral at the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation responsible for the ships construction, the Ivan Papanin is unique for its versatility and will able to perform the tasks of a tugboat and patrol ship in addition to its role as an icebreaker.
We wanted to create a ship that can give security to our fleet in the Arctic. At the same time it will be able to assist in scientific research. Overall the fleet will defend our national interests in the Arctic.
The ship will be supplied with a portable anti-aircraft missile system and artillery installation and will act as a permanent base for a military helicopter.

The Ivan Papanin is expected to be fitted with Kalibr cruise missiles and a 76.2mm gun, and can carry one Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter. The ship, known as Project 23550, was launched at the Admiralty Shipyard in St Petersburg.
The Rooskies keep prattling on about “The Arctic Is Ours.”
Oh yeah? Well, the moon is ours. Planted more than one flag there.
On Mars, too.
According to this piece of low-hanging fruitcake.
Battleship? Reporters are idiots.
What a waste of money. “Scientists” know the Artic will be ice free in 10 years.
Naturally we have it zero’d in....
Huh? I thought all the ice had melted.
Battleship? LOL.
Battleships are sure getting small.
Armed ice breaker... yeah, a battle ship it is not. Still, our ice breakers are not armed.
Of course our subs beneath the ice certainly are.
Getty image, sorry.
Bummer, but thanks. I’ll look elsewhere for another.
Oooohh - that's almost 3 inches! And a helicopter, too (and a Russian one, at that)!
Be afraid. Be very afraid!
I really wish the media would learn that Battleship is not a synonym for Warship.
It also caught my attention when Brett Bair mentioned President Roosevelt was aboard one of the Navy’s new destroyers for the trip to Lybia. The USS Iowa.
The 3 new US medium breakers will be armed,
How does a navy do ASW when there’s 3’ of ice on the surface?
76.2 gun fire rate 120-131 rounds minute, range 15.7 km; Kalibr NK cruise missiles range 1500-2000 miles - same missiles launched in the Caspian to take out terrorists in Syria.
medium duty breaker only breaks 1.5 meters ice.
