A cousin of my dad’s joined the war late and arrived just before the Battle of the Bulge. He thought it was crazy how the other guys would give him their pork and bean or ham rations.
Once he got out into the fighting he realized why - the pigs would be eating the dead Germans laying along the sides of the roads.
