That must have been some burger!
Tammi Jonas, a longtime vegetarian living in Victoria, Australia, had a surprising but undeniable craving for a hamburger while pregnant with her third child. Just one prime patty after many meat-free years.
Now, shes a professional butcher and a pig farmer.
The 49-year-old stopped eating meat when she was 19 after reading Australian philosopher Peter Singers book Animal Liberation, published in 1975. She maintained her V-card successfully through two pregnancies, but while carrying her third child, she also became dangerously anemic.
After the iron supplements failed, she pondered if protein would be the best way to get healthy for her and her baby.
I was at work one day and just thought: A burger would fix this,' Jonas told 10 Daily.
Over time, the reluctant meat-eater gradually worked her way back into an omnivorous lifestyle. Enlarge Image Facebook
I went back to red meat, so beef and lamb, once a week throughout the pregnancy, and it was some years longer before I had any pork or poultry, said Jonas, who explains that her beef with meat isnt about killing animals.
I never thought it was immoral to take an animals life for food, she said. Ive always been comfortable with my place in the food chain, but I thought it was immoral to treat [animals] cruelly, to not allow them to go outside and breathe fresh air and to be confined in crowds in sheds.
Jonas knew firsthand what went down on farms, having grown up on a cattle ranch in rural Oregon before moving to Australia in the 90s. So her move back to the land didnt surprise her.

Meat snacks are the best!
“Yes, they were. Ive also never known a veggie person not to eat meat when no one was looking.”
I knew two, and they both died very young.
“If the last 2.4 million years was turned into 24 hours of human existence...
We have eaten meat for the last 24 hours
We have eaten wheat/grains for the last 6 minutes
We have eaten processed food for the last 4 seconds
I think its easy to see where the real problem is.”
If you don’t mind, I’d like to take that for my home page. Also, I just did the math, it checks out. 6 minutes equates to 10,000 years, while 4 seconds is 111 years...pretty much dead-on.
Feel free to use it and share it any way you like. :)
I got it from someplace else and just worded it a little different.
"You like Krabby Patties, don't you Squidward?"
Always get Grass-Finished Beef. I found a good local butcher that gets their beef from local farms.

Thanks much!
I actually made a burger tonight using Portobello mushrooms for buns, it was great.
In-N-Out burger had a “protein” burger option where they’d replace the bun with a large piece of lettuce. A nice grilled burger with all the fixings was delicious that way, but I always wanted a second one. I choose meat over carbs.
Oh yes, I had a lot of those in my "Dirty Keto" phase, now I just make my own.
