With the issue of slavery reparations being seriously discussed in Democratic presidential debates, you might think they would have changed a few minds about it.
In fact, the number of Americans opposed to reparations has risen slightly in the last few months.
New York Post:
Few Americans are in favor of giving reparations to descendants of enslaved black people in the United States, a poll shows, even as the idea has gained momentum among Democratic presidential contenders.
Only 29% of Americans say the government should pay cash reparations, according to the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
But the poll reveals a large divide between Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Most black Americans, 74%, favor reparations, compared with 15% of white Americans. Among Hispanics, 44% favor reparations.

Just so you know the TRUTH. Poll taxes and Jim Crow laws disenfranchised as many POOR WHITES as POOR BLACKS.
Just so you know.
WUT THE!!!!!!
What about reparations from those harmed by the torture of prohibition?
“Only 29% of Americans say the government should pay cash reparations”
“Only”? That number is depressingly high.
Pay back the welfare first, then get back to us.
Let's go right to the source and make them PAY!
It's isLame! aka submission/subjugation/slavery!
That and Communism! Both still have and profit from SLAVERY! Both should be held accountable!
Uh, transportation costs, care and housing costs....
And the other 71% of Democrats believe they should receive reparations by credits to ebt cards.
No, pay back the Union dead first. Reparations is racism pure and simple. There isn’t a person alive today who should pay or receive slavery reparations.
Yes it is. And Ill bet that number has gone up 5 to 10 points over the last few years.
This MUST be made a top advertising topic for the political campaigns. We cannot let this go.
And, like the statement “I’ll never pay a nickel for that reparations stuff” followed by the cold reality of a couple at home looking at a paycheck deposit record:
Man: “What’s wrong, dear?”
Woman: “The damn reparations deduction went up again. $25% more.”
Man: “Yeah. I saw that on Yahoo News yesterday.”
"Do you want more money than you have ever had, for the rest of your life, and for each and every member of your extended family, so you never have to work again,....or...would you rather vote republican"?
Reparations would be a logistical nightmare and have a lot of unintended consequences. Most slave records from that time have been destroyed if the owners even bothered to give their slaves distinctive names at all. So a black will have a much harder time proving that they are the descendant of a slave than I will in proving that some of my ancestors did not immigrate to America until after slavery was abolished. Do I get a discount on the reparations tax?
Also by reducing white wealth it penalizes minorities (whose ancestors couldn’t possibly have owned slaves) for the crime of marrying a white person.
Many Black Americans already received reparations in the form of genes
Cultural analytic commentary
Exactly. Reparations? That ship done sailed. It amazes me that many people cannot realize that Lyndon Johnson was Americas worst president. Worse than Obama. Worse than Carter. His dismal failure in losing the Vietnam war was one reason, his Great Society is another.
Our current US deficit is over $7 trillion. About the same amount as the total losses Johnsons welfare society has brought us.
I support paying $1 billion dollars to every living person who was a slave before 1865.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On my Paternal Grandmother’s side, back in the days of the founding of the USA, my Quaker relatives bought slaves, in order to make them Free Men. Somewhere around here there are copies of the paperwork.
Must I also pay reparations, or do we get a rebate (with interest, please)?
Unfortunately, what most Americans want has little to do with what they end up getting.
Don’t forget that LBJ also gave us our current unrestricted immigration nightmare.
