‘Just too darn old:’ Sanders, Biden confront age concerns
Associated Press ^ | October 25, 2019 | Steve Peoples and Alexandra Jaffe

Bernie Sanders insists he feels better than ever less than a month after heart surgery, but his return to the campaign trail this week sparked new questions about the unusually old age of the Democratic Party’s leading 2020 presidential candidates.

Both Sanders, 78, and Joe Biden, 76, suggest their age isn’t a major issue, but voters, particularly older voters, aren’t so sure.

Gordon Lundberg, a 71-year-old retired Lutheran pastor from Ames, said candidates’ health is a key issue for him because he understands how it feels to age. He’s leaning toward Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts because, even though she’s 70, “she’s the most liberal and she’s not got one foot in the grave yet.”

“Bernie’s just too darn old. And so is Biden,” Lundberg said. “They look old, they sound old, they are old. They fall in the shower, and they get heart attacks!”

Lundberg is not alone.

Polling has suggested that a significant number of Americans believe a candidate in his or her late 70s is too old to be president. If elected, Sanders would take office having already exceeded the average U.S. life expectancy of 78.6 years, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. Biden would be just a few months away.

Warren would be the oldest new president in history, eclipsing Trump, who himself eclipsed Ronald Reagan. Biden and Sanders would be older on their first day in office than Reagan, a two-term president, was on his last. …

When Reagan ran they all claimed he was too old and they are even older these days.

I'd rather elect Jackie Mason over Bernie Sanders any day.

“a 71-year-old retired Lutheran pastor ... leaning toward Sen. Elizabeth Warren ... because ... ‘she’s the most liberal’”

It’s sad that Lutherans have sunk this low. When I was young, they seemed to pretty much walk the straight-and-narrow on social issues.

President Ronald Reagan on his age: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoPu1UIBkBc

Henry Trehwitt: “Mr. President, I want to raise an issue that I think has been lurking out there for two or three weeks and cast it specifically in national security terms.”

“You already are the oldest president in history. And some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall yet that President Kennedy had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuban missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?”

Reagan: “Not at all, Mr. Trehwitt, and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth, and inexperience.”

Paraphrasing another debate line . . . I worked for Ronald Reagan, I knew Ronald Reagan, Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine. Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are no Ronald Reagan.

Gordon Lundberg:

St. Andrew's Lutheran Church
Greeters – Linda & Gordon Lundberg

https://standrewsames.org/our-beliefs/ => St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church is ECLA

History of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church
The idea of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church began as early as 1948 when members of Bethesda Lutheran Church discussed the idea of a mision congregation for West Ames. Bethesda had grown to over 1600 members, and more than 7--- Lutheran students were making Bethesda their church home while they studied at Iowa State College. In 1950, Bethesda members voted to have representatives of the Evangelical Luther Church survey West Ames. The survey results indicated that a new congregation was feasible. St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church was founded in 1951 and the current building was dedicated on October 24, 1954. The current sanctuary was dedicated on November 17, 1963. Dedication of the education wing and offices occurred on May 4, 1980. The parking lot was paved in 1990 and the memorial garden was dedicated in 1994.

Not an either/or proposition. Numerous ELCA preachers are both.

Although there has been near infinite speculation on Hillary’s health, there has never been a definitive medical report that specifically describes her ailments.

She appeared well in the few seconds I saw her vitriol at the Cummings debacle

I would suggest a robbery at her doctor’s office is in order to steal her records for publication. Where is the media when it is actually needed?

Don't paint all Lutherans the same. This is likely an ELCA pastor. The part of the Lutheran segment can't be called Christian anymore.

Well, Sam Kinnison was, but he was raised Pentecostal, and died young (38).

Ok, you’re right!

Trump has the energy and stamina of of a 25 year old. Additionally, he is unbelievably tough and fierce, like a honey badger.

I love this President! :0)
