Huge swath of California could go dark with widest power outages yet expected this weekend
LA Times ^ | October 24, 2019 | Stuart Leavenworth and James Rainey

This weekend’s planned power outages could be the largest yet in California, as utilities such as Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison order wide blackouts to prevent more blazes — and more wildfire liability — amid heavy, hot winds.

PG&E, which has 5.4 million electric customers and provides power to 16 million Californians, was projecting Thursday that it could shut off power across nearly all of its territory in Northern California on Sunday and Monday because of ferocious gusts.

“This system will likely be the strongest event of the year from a wind perspective,” the utility said on its website. “Federal forecast agencies are in alignment that this will be a high-risk weather event.”

Is there still no active forest management out there? I know it may take a minute to catch up due to years of neglect. “Let’s see...leave the dead undergrowth in place and appease the fruitcake “environmentalists”, or have electricity and enjoy refrigeration, hospital care, etc, etc...hmmmm”

People on the ISS should get their cameras ready. Maybe they can take a California picture like this.

And sparks from the mufflers of those generators running on their $5/gal gas reach dried brush and cause more fires anyway. Or Homeless Jose squatting in a canyon gets cold and lights himself a little pile of sticks and brush to keep warm and more fires are started.

Californians getting what they deserve.

Not necessarily.

The rural areas tend to be red and the people who are paying are generally not the ones who voted for that crap.

Same applies to NY.

Take NYC out of the picture and you have a red state, not a blue one. The problem is, NYC's population simply muscles it's way through the politics in the state with no regard for how it affects the rest of the state.

They're trying to make them leave CA so the blue voters can populate red states.

There is nothing like seeing sitting in the dark watching your food spoil to make you think about how stupid your government actually is.

I don’t know. We are talking about people who are very, very, very, very, very stupid.

MSNBC will blame it on Trump and their viewers will nod and drool and pick their noses and vote democrap. (Once the power comes back on, of course.)

Don’t forget - this was at the BEHEST of a federal judge -

Judge’s order strives to reduce the number of fires caused by PG&E
By Adam Brinklow Jan 10, 2019, 11:09am PST

“PG&E may not take into account the inconvenience to customers or its revenues and profits” over safety, says federal judge

https://sf.curbed.com/2019/1/10/18177144/pge-power-grid-shutdown-order-wildfire-judge-fires

On Wednesday, a federal judge in charge of Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) ongoing criminal probation laid out a series of new regulations on the utility that are “intended to reduce to zero the number of wildfires caused by PG&E in the 2019 wildfire season.”

In the most sweeping of the proposed changes to the terms of PG&E’s probation, Judge William Alsup says that the company must shut off power to parts of its grid whenever there is sufficient risk of a fire hazard:

quote -———————
At all times during the 2019 Wildfire Season (and thereafter), PG&E may supply electricity only through those parts of its electrical grid it has determined to be safe under the wind conditions then prevailing. Conversely, PG&E must de-energize any part of its grid not yet rated as safe by PG&E for the wind conditions then prevailing until those conditions have subsided. [...]

PG&E may not take into account the need for reliability of service, the inconvenience to customers resulting from interruption in service, or its impact upon PG&E’s revenues and profits.
unquote -———————

This could mean extended blackouts for PG&E customers. But as Alsup points out, that’s a minor concern compared to the results of the state’s 2017 and 2018 wildfire records.

Yep! My wife grew up in Thousand Oaks (Ventura Co). ALL of her aunts and uncles have fled to UT, NV, WY, ID, and CO. Only ones left are the couple of commie cousins.

They should just shut down all power to the state for the months that fire is a hazard. The residents can use batteries and go green.

This is ridiculous! There are already fires everywhere. Shutting off the power was supposedly to prevent fires in high winds. This is payback for the lawsuit loss under the guise of ‘prevention’. Tell me, what are they preventing at this point?

That $5 gas has ethanol. Not ideal for generators.

The obvious solution to this problem is to raise taxes, and create a new state agency to run the power companies...
