Trump announces 'permanent ceasefire' in Syria between Turkey and Kurds; lifts sanctions on Ankara

President Trump announced on Wednesday that conditions have been met between Turkey and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for what he called a " permanent ceasefire" between the two sides and that the United States is lifting sanctions on Ankara that were implemented following the invasion of northern Syria.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said that while a "permanent ceasefire" will be tough to maintain in the volatile region, he hopes that it will last and end the conflict between Turkey and the Kurds.

"I do believe it will be permanent," he said. "This was an outcome created by us, the United States, and nobody else...we've done something very, very special"

Trump's comment follows an early morning tweet, where he said a “safe zone” along the Turkey-Syria border and as he faces strong bipartisan criticism for pulling back U.S. troops from northern Syria.

The liberals are saying he is only protecting his property in Turkey.

If this had been Obama he would be up for a Nobel Peace Prize.

When people think in the same way of tariffs as they do military action, kinetic or otherwise, look at ROI for each. A tariff is, essentially, an economic military intervention, without the overt casualty count. Once people think in those terms and not in strictly business transaction effects, then the overall concept would become much clearer and more acceptable by conservatives and even libertarians.

They say he’s incompetent and confused and that he’s in way over his head.

The left thinks he is like Forrest Gump, and all these great things are just happening AROUND him, and DESPITE him. The election, economy, trade deals, geopolitical successes, peace deals, it's all just luck and happenstance.

How will the liberals and never Trumpers react to that?

Last week there was some sniper fire from the Kurds’ neutralized by Turk mortars, and during the next few weeks there may be some minor skirmishes but nothing of consequence. The Turks know well the devastating power of Trump economic sanctions. They will not risk it.

No doubt. Instead, the left is forced to give credit to either Trump or Putin, both of whom they hate. In reality, Obama inserted himself into Syria's civil war, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and a refugee crisis that displaced 11 million people, and affected hundreds of millions.

By merely getting out of Syria's civil war, Trump allowed a national reconciliation that ended the war. Erdogan provided a common enemy to speed up that process.

Trump wouldnt have given this speech without good information that the YPG/PKK were cooperating.

I don't think they had a choice with Turkey, Russia, Syria, and the U.S. against them.

This all happened when it did because of the Trump imposed tariffs. Don’t think for a moment these tariffs didn’t get Erdogans attention and in a very big way.

Since Erdogan got everything he wanted it's hard to think of a reason why he wouldn't agree to the deal.

What? Trump wanted our troops home or at least out of Syria and he achieved that. He wanted the Kurds to escape slaughter and he got that as well.

So what if Erdogan got what he wanted? Those people have been fighting for centuries and it is up to THEM to sort their territory issues out by themselves.

Are you actually saying we should stay and fight for the Kurds over THEIR claims of territory against the Turks?

The fact is the whole pack of those Camel Jockeys are not worth the life of one of our soldiers.

I don't think they had a choice with Turkey, Russia, Syria, and the U.S. against them.

They really had no choice. They were used to fighting with the benefit of Air Support, artillery support, Special Operations support, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) support, against enemies that had little to none of those things. Facing the Turks without US, they found out what it is like to be on the other side of that fight.

My wife has the CBS Evening News on and they are terribly trying to spin this as a negative thing.

Also, the Russians have long been allied with the Syrian regime, so I think they’ll keep things quiet on that front because this will benefit all the players in this. And it will benefit us enormously to be out of it.

Half the “rebels” Obama was supporting were covert ISIS bands anyway.

Nancy’s nearby in Jordan. Maybe she could swing over to Turkey near the border, and sabotage it. Her and Schiff just pick up some weapons and start firing into Syria. They got an election to win.

Kristol is hugging himself in a corner as well.

I think the American PEOPLE will appreciate this. So strange than all of Congress can be so out of step with Americans.

David Stockman (not pro-Trump) has a very interesting article on the situation over at Lewrockwell.com. It turns out everyone directly involved is going to be reasonable. I would like to know Israel’s reaction.

Maybe next step is for Trump to sort things out with Iran. Not sure that one is too simple.
