Vatican at risk of default due to plummeting donations: exposé

The Vatican is in need of salvation.

Donations to the Catholic Church have plummeted in the wake of its pervasive clergy sex abuse scandal — so much so that it’s at risk of default by 2023, according to a new exposé.

In 2006, the church raked in 101 million euros ($112 million) in contributions. By 2016, that number was 70 million euros ($77.9 million), and now could be less than 60 million euros, the Telegraph reported.

The startling bottom line is according to Italian investigative journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose new book, “Universal Judgment,” came out Monday.

He blames the church’s financial mess on a dip in donations, as well as poor money management and bad real estate deals.

“If the pontificate of Francis fails, it won’t be because of the attacks of conservative Catholics or the crisis in vocations or because of the declining number of faithful,” Nuzzi writes in the book. “It will be because of the financial collapse that is coming ever closer.”

The Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, a department of the Vatican which oversees real estate and investments, lost the equivalent of nearly $49 million last year — prompting officials to set up an emergency task force, according to Nuzzi.

He said the real estate portfolio was worth an estimated 2.7 billion euros ($3 billion) and was poorly managed. Some 800 properties were empty, while 15 percent of the 3,200 rented properties were being leased for free or for below-market prices.

This article completely misses the point. Many, many Catholics have opted out of the Francis papacy and are sitting on the sidelines or sending their donations to traditionalist orders. Sadly, I think that if FrancisChurch decides they are in financial straits, they will seize the assets of the traditional orders, or try to.

I said this 10 years ago.
This is the real reason the Catholic Church and many other denominations are backing illegal immigration.
They are running out of money.

Maintenance cost alone on many of these Cathedrals are bankrupting them.

This is just a micro version of what is effecting the entire world.
They are running out of money.

Well, since they’re so taken with the new pope, let the wealthy “gays” bail them out.

It is said that the theologian Thomas Aquinas…once called on Pope Innocent II when the latter was counting out a large sum of money. The Pope remarked, You see, Thomas, the church can no longer say, Silver and gold have I none. Aquinas replied, True, holy father, but neither can she now say, Rise and walk.

I usually say, nothing changes till the cash flow stops, but there is so much ideology lately, even that doesn’t change things.

I’ve been hearing stories of pedo priests since I was young. Nothing has ever been done about it. It was to the point jokes about priests and altarboys were widespread and hardly raised an eyebrow. When it became known that accused pedo priests were simply moved to unaware parishes people started paying attention. Francis is just icing on the cake.

Absolutely correct. What the article misses is that the revolt of the peons is not based just on the sexual abuse scandals - those were clearly awful enough, but still the faithful recognize that sinfulness plagues us all, laity or clergy. What really ticked off the pew-sitters was the lame response to that scandal from the hierarchy, Francis on down.

As just one example, here in Chicago when Cupich was asked about that scandal, his response (paraphrased) was that he really didn’t see any point in going down that “rabbit hole” (his words) when we had important matters like climate change to address. Well I’m sorry, Frankie and Blaisie, but you don’t know shiite about atmospheric chemistry, but you should know something about moral theology, and if you can’t effectively address matters like McKittrick, you really need to find a new line of work.

People who want to donate to the Catholic Church are probably starting to realize that they might as well donate directly to ISIS. Why use a middle-man?

Get rid of Pope Che

On the contrary, I believe this was the precise reason WHY they got rid of Pope Benedict and installed Che.

Things had been tailing off at the collection basket even before the latest round of horrifying pedophile revelations. The Vatican analyzed the reasons and concluded thus:

1) Young people were walking away from the Church because it was not hip/now/with it on social issues, particularly those involving climate and sexuality.

2) Adults who had their marriage hit the rocks, perhaps through no fault of their own, ended up divorced and facing a choice between spending the rest of their lives celibate, being excluded from the Sacraments and becoming second class citizens, or subjecting themselves to an Annulment Kangaroo Court. They chose none of the above and left to join other churches.

3) The number of Churches that could be open and the number of Masses that could be said (with the corresponding number of collections) was plummeting along with the number of Priests. Celibacy was making it increasingly difficult to recruit new men into the Priesthood.

If you study what they are doing it is intended to address all three. Follow the money. Pope Benedict called for a smaller, holier, poorer, more devout Church. The majority of Cardinals, more concerned with careers and empire building, rejected that on delivery and forced him out.
