Joe Biden Isn’t Going to Make It
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 16, 2019 | Daniel Henninger

Posted on 10/16/2019 5:42:10 PM PDT by billorites

One watches these Democratic debates with the same core question in mind: Can any of these candidates—Biden, Warren, Sanders, Buttigieg, Harris or the seven others—take down Donald Trump? Are any capable of going one-on-one for three months next fall with the greatest mixed-martial-arts fighter in presidential history?

This week’s debate took place about a year from the main event, so let’s cut to the question of the moment: Is Joe Biden going to make it? In my opinion, no. Based on his performance in Westerville, Ohio, Mr. Biden is not going to make it.

To be clear, the issue here isn’t whether Mr. Biden or any of the others can win the Democratic presidential nomination. It’s whether that nominee can compete with Donald Trump. Can he stand on a stage in the presidential debates and not get beaten by the president into something small by comparison? For all the immeasurable hours spent now on politicking, the presidential debates have become the main event.

The 1960 debate set the template for these make-or-break contests. An upstart Massachusetts senator named John F. Kennedy won on points against Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president, Richard Nixon. As skilled a political talker as ever existed, Nixon never quite recovered from that debate performance.

Yes, we know, Chicago’s Mayor Richard J. Daley “stole” the election for JFK, but if Nixon had defeated the untested Massachusetts senator in that first significant televised debate, he’d have been president in 1961.

We learned during the Republican primary debates in 2016 that Donald Trump is capable of fighting in ways that would get him disqualified from an organized cage match. The fact remains that the Democratic Party and the media, beginning with their “Russian collusion narrative” and all the rest, have let Donald Trump practice and hone his fighting skills.

He should have exited the scene quietly and preserved his (and his family’s) honor.

I’m so happy reading the WSJ now instead of Drudge.

" if at crunchtime your candidate looks like a loser, as Michael Dukakis did against George H.W. Bush in the 1988 presidential debate, well, you are going to lose. Hunter Biden and Donald Trump aren’t dragging down Mr. Biden. He is doing it himself."

No, Biden’s too stupid for that
He has to embarrass himself out of the race.

When, and why, did you read Drudge?

Most of us go there to get links to news articles.

The WSJ is not a conservative paper anymore. They’re a bastion of neocons and rino statists.

Very never-Trump in the 2016 election cycle.

Joe Biden should be reviewing the life and times of Whitey Bulger. The last six-months may be worth concentrating on.

But, but Nixon won with the radio listeners.

Trump is a special case but in general I feel that 70 is getting a bit too old to be president or leader of any large country. And I am that age myself. The decline may be slight (Biden and Sanders were never much to begin with) but the voter has to factor in further declines likely to take place in the four year (or whatever) term. I think the rule that requires a minimum of 35 years is sound, perhaps a maximum of 65 at election would be wise. And if somebody just under that age sought re-election, I suppose that could be an exception granted by the voters at their discretion, so my rule would not be invoked for a second-term election attempt.

Even if I supported Sanders, for example, my vote would be heavily influenced by how I viewed his running mate.

Trump being more or less one of a kind, I would say hold off on passing this law until 2023.

In Trump presidential debates, he really screwed up the first one but he learned fast and by the third was really shining.

He now has the experience to debilitate an opponent and none of the dem contenders are even close to his league for being quick on their feet with thinking or comebacks.
