Trump should swiftly reject the schedule of 2020 debates
Washington Post ^ | October 15, 2019 | Hugh Hewitt

Last week, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced the schedule of 2020 presidential debates. President Trump should quickly dismiss that schedule as unacceptable and announce that if any debates will be held at all in 2020, it will be only after extensive, direct negotiations between him and the eventual nominee of the Democratic Party and their respective designated representatives.

And those negotiations should begin from a premise that the Republicans will no longer play by the biased rules of a deeply unbalanced Manhattan-Beltway media elite. Explicitly articulating this declaration of intent now, along with the possibility that, as in 1968 and 1972, there won’t be any debates, would do both the public and the elite media a great service.

The Manhattan-Beltway media elite seems to the center-right of the country at large to be overwhelmingly committed to the defeat of Trump. Essentially half of the United States expects the four debates will, in fact, be four ambushes by the combined forces of the Democratic nominee and the elite media operating in tandem, though not in explicit coordination. Look at the Gallup numbers: The media’s credibility is shattered beyond repair. The self-proclaimed refs are not trusted by more than half of the public. That’s undeniable anymore.

"Trump is the incumbent who can restore presidential debates to serious exercises in exploring the crucial differences between the two major-party candidates, but he has to begin by taking a wrecking ball to the perceived entitlement of a system begun before cellphones and the Internet and built on the thoroughly debunked belief in media “objectivity.” So start over. There are plenty of alternatives, and the best would involve open access and genuinely smart, diverse questioners who are not rehearsed to seek conflict, headlines or ratings. A lesser dose of media celebrity is a higher dose of fairness to the voters. (And please, no more idiotic “town halls.”)"

How about no moderators

The ideal format for me would be simply Time Moderators. They turn a candidate’s microphone on for 3 minutes, then turn it off, with a big clock ticking visibly on the wall. Then turn the next candidate’s microphone on for 3 minutes, then turn it off. And repeat.

Each says what he/she wants in the 3 minute mic-on period, then STFU for the next 3 minutes.

The Time Moderater’s only qualification: must be a deaf-mute.

Hewitt is too much of an establishment Repuke to suit me, but I back him up 100% on this.

Excellent suggestion...And why at academia where the hard left is most organized?

“Make OANN one of the debate sponsors And Breitbart another”

Absolutely right.

Trump should announce:

“Back in 2016 during the debates, they messed with my microphone so I sounded like a heavy breather, messed up the tint on my camera, gave Hillary an earpiece and let Donna Brazile give Hillary the questions in advance - and I still won.

For 2020, the incumbent should set the rules and here are my rules: we will have only one debate. It will be held in Florida. It will last two hours. There will be one timekeeper and two moderators. The candidate for whom the question is directed will have three minutes to answer and the opponent will then have two minutes for rebuttal. Tom Perez, the DNC Chairman, will be the moderator who directs all questions at me. Ronna Romney McDaniel, the RNC Chairwoman, will be the moderator who directs all questions at my opponent.

There will be nobody from the media allowed to ask questions during this debate. It is entirely fair and equitable. I am sure Mr. Perez and Ms. McDaniel will both have tough questions for their opposing candidates which will allow the American public to see and weigh which candidate deserves their vote.”

Crowley in 2016, Brazile in 2016. CNN is out as a debate moderator. That’s the first thing Trump should say. Any anti-Trump discussions by the moderators during the MSNBC debates should also exclude them, in addition to how they brass at NBC treat women.

Which leaves Fox. I would go with Levin, Hannity and Ingraham as the moderators.

The night before the 2016 election Trump announced a rally with just a few hours’ notice — at 1:00 in the morning of Election Day, I think. As always, thousands showed up, with overflow outside.

I’d love to see that on debate nights. Let the RAT candidate stand there alone on the stage with his/her mouth hanging open.

Why even have “debates”? In quotes because what we’ve been given are not real debates.

Printed copies of the schedule of the 2020 presidential debates should be crumpled and shaped in the form of a suppository and sent to each member of the Commission on Presidential Debates with instructions on where they can shove it.

What a GREAT scenario! And not a single questionable thing in it! Can you somehow convey this to President Trump or his campaign managers? Wow!

I’ve said for years that TV ruins everything it touches and this is another proof of that statement.

Take political advertising off TV. Limit campaigns to four months...this 2+ years cycle is crushing for everybody.

They can be invited to televise them, but they should not be any part of deciding their schedule, where they are held, who moderates them or anything else. Trump should make it clear the purpose to the debates are not FOR the media, and we do not accept that they are in any way unbiased presenters.
.......................................................
I hope our President is advised to do exactly as you’ve described. Millions of Americans are thoroughly repulsed by the arrogance of the news media and its continuous fabrication of lies.

Trump should not participate in any debates. He’s got more important things to do. Have Pence come a read s prepared statement of his accomplishments.

the moderators need to be proven non-biased.

No such thing. The only way to do this is with balance. The communists get Stephanopolis, we get Limbaugh.
