FULL TITLE: The US needs 307,000 more teachers than it currently has but few are taking the job due to low pay
The student population is growing and not enough teaching jobs are available to keep up.
A new report found that since the Great Recession of 2008, the country lost 60,000 jobs in education. Not only that, but 247,000 more teaching jobs should have been created to keep up with growing student enrollment as the population increases.
This has resulted in a shortfall of 307,000 teaching jobs meaning there are over 300,000 educators currently needed right now.
The data sheds light on an ongoing national teacher shortage. Back in 2008, teaching jobs increased at the same pace as student enrollment. Since the Great Recession, or after 60,000 jobs were lost, job creation in education never kept pace with the growing student enrollment.
Other data centers have similarly staggering estimates of the teacher shortage crisis. The independent research group Learning Policy Institute estimated a 112,000 teacher shortage in 2018.
The study uses data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics analyzed by the liberal think-tank Economic Policy Institute. Educator jobs include mostly K-12 public school teachers, but also administrators, guidance counselors, and paraeducator.

I’ve got a friend who is a retired teacher, and my wife was an assistant working with special needs kids for years. With what the education system has become...you couldn’t pay me enough to put up with that BS. I’m surprised my buddy made it to retirement without putting someone- student or administrator in a headlock and choking them out.
Where are they needed? Public schools or private ones? Where are the schools? Location, location, location? Is a CC required in some of those schools? They aren’t the students of the 50’s, you need multi lingual teachers. Probably more English teaching than anything else.
All I know is our public school districts spending seems to rise 5% a year, regardless of what’s happening in the economy. And from what I see, NO new teachers are needed. Its merely about building the size of the bureaucracy and the union’s power.
Many teachers quit after their first year of teaching. Its not because of the salary. Its because of the uncivilized behavior of many of todays children. And their parents are even worse.
There are about 5.1 million illegal immigrant kids. If we have 49.5 million school-age children and about 8 million teachers and educators, even if we got rid of the illegals we’d still have too many bureaucrats.
you’re right why bother. Build the schools, hire the teachers pay for them to be bi-lingual.
I am mildly sympathetic to the teachers’ plight. The kids are only as good as the parents in many cases. As an old talk show host in Philadelphia, the late Irv Homer used to say, you can’t raise a thoroughbred when the parents are asses.
The US government's child-incarceration-asylum department needs 307,000 more marxist propagandists than it currently has...
Above each classroom door a sign:
Thirty Shall Enter! Only One Shall Leave!
At A Time
With A Hall Pass
To Use The Restroom
What is really needed is a daily pre-screening apt to determine if a student can learn on a particular level of competence.
Administered twice a day or else sent to a different class or location elsewhere. Birds of feather think together.
I’d say the teaching profession comes up short because most leftist propagandists prefer a media career or to be a politician, or work for a politician.
That’s where the big money is, and as a bonus, they don’t have to be around yucky children they believe should have been aborted.
In public schools, the illegals keep the other kids back. They dont speak the language and I know teachers who are very frustrated.
no doubt-use the school buildings for ICE detention centers.
Get back to one income
parents teach their own
abolish school taxation racket
Here in Marin County all the old teachers hold on forever and dont retire
and theres tons of young ones waiting in the wings
I wish they would retire already !
You cant keep up with 10 year olds in your 70s !
Great detective work.
I know lousy teachers who are made to wander the library or lunch room.
But they are still “teachers”. Never see a classroom.

I don’t blame people for not wanting to do that job.
They are expected to politicize everything and they can’t send unrulies out because it’s racist or something.
Rush Limbaugh used to play a parody PSA that knocked at an actual PSA about a whole office of candidates and not one person “qualified” for the job because of institutional blacklisting.
