The police chief says it made sense for the 28-year-old to arm herself if she thought someone was in the backyard of her home.

Apparently Atatiana Jefferson didn't realize the noise she heard outside was a cop sent to check on her welfare.

It looks like the defense is going to be 'she had a gun'.

"See a gun, shoot".
"See a cell phone, shoot".
"A dog barks, shoot".

There needs to be something more to police training.

The cop never announced his presence as a LEO, can't blame the gal.

Unless the shooter articulated that he saw a gun being pointed at him prior to shooting the woman, he has no defense or excuse. Like Guyger, he drew and with intent to shoot the person. Now and if he saw a woman pointing a gun at him, he may be justified in shooting, but she may have been fully justified in going to guns in a defensive posture suspecting foul play at hand. His presence should have been made known rather than skulking around outside of normal approach or curtilage. Seems he was trespassing....

Regardless ... for a welfare check, the officer should have made his presence known at the open front door instead of snooping around the house.

If somebody was prowling around my backyard unannounced at 2:30 in the morning I would have grabbed my gun too, guess I would have been dead too.

The neighbor that called the police about the door being
open will have a hard time living with this I suspect.

If she’d only had a dog... the cop would have shot it, too.

I'm not casting any judgment since I wasn't in the room or in the shoes of the responding officer.

A tragic series of events and one that has ruined the lives of the family that lost a daughter and mother and a law enforcement officer who joined the force for all the right reasons.

I sure wouldn't want to be on that jury........

Did I miss the part where the cop identified himself before he just pulled his gun and fired?

One thing about all this is crystal clear, and that’s the outcome of the welfare check. She is not doing well, not well at all. Could be argued she’s never been worse.

Not that this lowers the cop’s crime any, but Is it possible that they could make an 8 year old say anything during interrogation?

Another perspective-— what if the cops get the call to check to see if something happened to this neighbor and the front door is open and the cops see it open. Then the cop sees a person (it’s dark) and that person is pointing a gun at them thru window. Cop may assume the person with the gun just broke into the house...

not saying any of this is true, just another perspective

Poor training and compromised test standards usually manifest in situations like this.

These kinds of stories always bring out divergent points of view here. I wonder if that’s the case at the rat sites?

I don't know if it mentions this in the article (ad blocker roadblock), but here is what the chief had to say about it. BTW, the murderer is out on bail, too.

"At a press conference Tuesday, Chief Ed Kraus grew emotional when describing the morale of the police department. He says "officers are hurting" because of the fatal shooting and that he has not encountered an officer who disagrees with the decision to arrest Aaron Dean."

“It looks like the defense is going to be ‘she had a gun’. “

The cop committed murder.

The fact the victim considered defending herself notwithstanding.

Murder.

Sick to death of blame cops first, second guessing crapola.
How about the investigation of all the facts first - unless you have an agenda. Tagging along with Hands U Don’t Shoot.
