Unless the shooter articulated that he saw a gun being pointed at him prior to shooting the woman, he has no defense or excuse. Like Guyger, he drew and with intent to shoot the person. Now and if he saw a woman pointing a gun at him, he may be justified in shooting, but she may have been fully justified in going to guns in a defensive posture suspecting foul play at hand. His presence should have been made known rather than skulking around outside of normal approach or curtilage. Seems he was trespassing....
If I hear things going bump in the night, I grab a gun to go investigate. I guess if it is a cop wandering in the backyard, I ought to shoot him before he can kill me.
If a cop goes wandering around in someone’s back yard at 2:30 AM, he is setting himself up to shoot someone in “self-defense”. I reckon the cop needs to be held responsible for CAUSING the situation.
The trespassing intruder had no excuse even IF he saw the lawfully armed homeowners self defense weapon. His funny blue costume is not a license to commit murder.

You are expecting low paid cops, possibly with families, to assume all the risks and receive no rewards. If a cop reasonably fears that there might be a criminal in a house, he had better do some “skulking” around first. Why should any cop in that position have to announce his presence, especially in he sees somebody in the house with a gun? If a cop in that situation thinks like you and announces his presence, he could end-up dead.
