Trump Followed His Gut on Syria. Calamity Came Fast.

...snip... And over the weekend, State and Energy Department officials were quietly reviewing plans for evacuating roughly 50 tactical nuclear weapons that the United States had long stored, under American control, at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, about 250 miles from the Syrian border, according to two American officials.

Those weapons, one senior official said, were now essentially Erdogan’s hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. To keep them there, though, is to perpetuate a nuclear vulnerability that should have been eliminated years ago.

“I think this is a first — a country with U.S. nuclear weapons stationed in it literally firing artillery at US forces,” Jeffrey Lewis of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies wrote last week.

Interesting, blunt read. Seems like we should have active plans to destroy all Turkish forces, hopefully ready to initiate on a moment's notice.

Breaking News? Yes, I think this whole matter is highest urgency--fifty of our nukes in a country that is shelling our troops.

And a NATO country or not, at what point does a state of war exist? How do we expel Turkey from NATO? How do we extract our troops, contractors, and families from Turkey? When does this start? (Short of Turkey ceasing it's offensive and pulling back troops, I don't see the situation getting better.)

Other thoughts?

Relax. President Trump did the right thing. NYT writing pearl clutching articles about it pretty much proves that.

I’m not sure I buy that view. I don’t see Erdogan asking for negotiations with the Kurds. He seems more likely to see the solution through Kurds being dead. Turks are bloodthirsty with a history of genocide. What is happening is that this trait is now front and center.

“ Turks are bloodthirsty with a history of genocide. What is happening is that this trait is now front and center.”

Not our problem.

Then it would seem the person writing that article was lying through his teeth. It seems Erdogan made some calls trying to work things out, by his comments.

Does seem somewhat out of character, but I don’t know how much of this is true or not.

We’ll see.

Just cancel all $5 billion worth of foreign military sales contracts. No more spare parts, no technical assistance, no munitions. Turkey’s military falls apart in six months.

I’m not saying Trump did or did not do the right thing. I think the consequences of Turkish aggression is our new challenge. And, yes, I think our NATO alliance is now faced with what to do with Turkey. It bothers me, too, to see the Kurds tossed into Assad’s hands. Just when it appeared things might be calming in region, everything is stirred up and Turkey goes on a killing rampage into Syria. I don’t see how greenlighting this, allowing it, stepping aside for it, or whatever helps us. Being “surprised” is even worse.

This faction of the Kurds, PKK , is certainly no ally either as they are of the communist ilk. They were mercenaries we hired, paid them well, and provided them with arms. So in no way are they allies. Turkey is an ally because of their membership in NATO, but not a trusted ally in any way shape or form. Get the nukes out of there, which President Trump should have done long ago in my opinion. But neither rise to the level of deserving this nation love our blood and treasures defending. That is a given.

I’ve read several reports from multiple sources indicated that US forces were in the midst of artillery. Maybe not targeted, and I’m sure the folks on the ground might offer clarifying opinion, but bet they aren’t ignoring it.

“Anyone who wants to assist Syria in protecting the Kurds is good with me, whether it is Russia, China, or Napoleon Bonaparte. I hope they all do great, we are 7,000 miles away!” -- Trump tweet.

So, are we urging them to attack Turkey to defend the Kurds? And if they do, what do we do? Do we stand by, declare neutrality. Sit tight on our 50 nukes in Turkey? How many US soldiers, contractors, and families are in Turkey?

The description I read was “bracketed” by artillery.

Assuming the Turks are using the 155mm guns that we sold them or they are building themselves, a South Korean SP gun, that means that it was at least a hundred meters or so away, but that would be awfully, make a mistake and you got a war with Uncle Sam stupidly close. I’m guessing the Turks gave themselves a lot of safety margin.

Once you learn to read Fake News, you realize that you are probably “bracketed” by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and it aint that alarming.

Dear Turkey, we’ll remove the nukes, or if not, they may be subject to an accident that sets them off where they are. That wouldn’t be very nice, would it?

So you think we should have sent armor to fight Turkey, because that is what it would have taken to stop it? I don’t think Kurds are worth our soldiers dying for and eventually the Kurds would have had to make a deal with Assad anyways. What I haven’t seen talked about much is the possibility that this may end up with Turkey getting their butts kicked back across their border. You just never know how these muslim v. muslim wars will end up. I think it will shake out one way or another and it’s really not our concern any way it goes.

The US forces already left. That’s why the Turks are attacking.

Turkey is a NATO ally. Syria is aligned with Russia.

If US forces were to get involved it would be on the side of the Turks, per NATO treaty. Why on earth do you want to help Assad defend his border?

“Dear Turkey, we’ll remove the nukes”

Nope. That would be a victory for Russia and Iran.
