Marshall Islands declares national climate crisis
The Hill ^ | 10/11/19 | Miranda Green

Posted on 10/11/2019 11:00:29 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

The Republic of the Marshall Islands, one of the lowest lying island nations in the world, has declared a national emergency over climate change.

The country’s president, Hilda Heine, tweeted the news Friday, blaming the international community for not acting quickly enough to mitigate global warming “of its own making.”

“Our parliament has officially declared a national climate crisis. As one of only four low-lying coral atoll nations in the world, the failure of the international community to adequately respond to the global climate crisis of its own making holds particularly grave consequences,” she tweeted.

The official declaration of the “National Climate Crisis” cites the findings of the United Nation Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that warned of the extreme climate effects expected to impact low-lying atoll nations.

The report predicted that a global average temperature rise between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius could result in an average sea level rise between one and four feet by 2100.

Build a seawall - good enough for Galveston, good enough for you.

Wouldn’t it be better for the coral reef to be under the water?

And yet a 5-15 degree below average here in my locality didn’t even make the F section of the paper.

I read an article a while back, that talked about the water level actually receding a hair at some South Pacific islands.

Shhhh, don’t tell...

I’ve got a piece of land in Newport NC that leads out to the Atlantic. I’ve had it for 9 years (gonna build on it when I retire) and it’s still 7inches above sea level at high tide. No one who has built there has had a fire sale as far as I know.

She should read: Underworlds, by Graham Hancock.

The seas used to be much lower (and much higher).

There are lots of beaches with a slope of 3 or 4 inch rise. If sea rise were happening it would be easy to document disappearing shorelines.

I haven't seen any photo essays.

One typhoon away from being washed over the edge of the drop off. People are moving away to other places. Probably a wise choice.

A barrier island that bars nothing but open sea from open sea.

Surfing: https://www.indiestrader.com/content/surf/ Almost like pelagic surfing!

Sea levels rise and fall over time. Keep the runway and harbor for the surfers and emergency plane landing. Ecourage anyone not involved in infrastructure support to move to safer islands.

Miami is sinking. A big part of the problem is groundwater extraction so south Florida can grow tasteless tomatoes picked green and truck ripened to put on whoppers. If they cared about sea level rise they would first start by not extracting groundwater. Until they do, you know they aren't serious.
