Temperatures in Colorado plunged 64 degrees on Thursday, the largest temperature drop the state has ever seen in October. It's also the 15th largest temperature drop over a two day period in Denver's history, according to the National Weather Service.
At the Denver airport alone, the temperature dropped 55 degrees. CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said at 2 p.m. on Wednesday it was 79 degrees and on Thursday at 2 p.m. the temperature read 24 degrees.
The cold front moved in on Wednesday night bringing extremely gusty winds, snow, and the first freeze of the season.

I am actually amazed at how well they forecast temps, wind speeds, precipitation and pressure. They started predicting the cold and snow here a couple of weeks ago and it came about very close to the original numbers.
The last updated prediction yesterday for my town, before this hit, was 4 inches of snow and 24 for a high today. I got 5 inches of snow and the high was 29.7. Not bad for a small town, where a very small number of people care what the weather will be, in a mountain valley with lots of topographical variables.
After 20 years in Colorado I can tell you the temperature is the third most important thing in how cold it feels. Is it sunny? Is the wind blowing? Then what’s the temp? Sunny, no wind, and 25 degrees can be tee shirt weather if you’re out being active.
Meme-worthy.
I always remember a day, probably around this same time of year, when my BF and I were late to a movie and so we just hung around until the next showing. It was a nice day so we were just hanging around, window shopping as we used to say.
And it just started getting colder and colder. Finally we remarked upon it, and there was a bank or something with one of those clock/thermometer signs and we realized that the temp had dropped 10 degrees in about one hour!
Luckily it was time for our movie!
After 30 years in SW Colorado (Ignacio...just south of Durango) I agree.
I love the weather here...
FMCDH(BITS)
Around the Great Lakes (except North), winter is no sun and always wind.
Do you have people like the media idiots who want to name everything? Your rapid drop would be called something like "Steam 2 Icepocalypse! of the Century."
No sir. The Rockies aint the Sierra Nevada. For sure !
You got a whole damn state in there between . ( Utah )
“Must be all that global warming... “
no doubt about it: global warming making things colder ...
“Reason #227 why I could never live in Colorado...one day it’s 70,the next day it’s 10. “
ah, come on ... it keeps things interesting ...
Reason # 228 should be the dreadful hailstones.
“Thats quite a drop in a short period. Good luck to everybody who suddenly needs a new car battery”
here’s the thing ... this was all predicted practically to the minute three days ago, so we all had plenty of time to get ready ... i blew out my sprinkler system, finished up a few outdoor projects, put a new filter in the furnace, went to the store for a few things, and that was it. and all done while it was a wonderful 77 degrees, with great sunshine and no wind!
it was only about 3 inches of snow anyway, and only a few degrees below freezing, so all in all, quite a mild little cold snap ... the only unusual thing about it was that the weather had been so splendidly warm right prior to the cold snap ...
Nope, she was walking around her bedroom naked from the waist down, the fallout landed in Colorado. (There’s some gasoline in the shed to wash out your eyes with, to take away the pain of that vision) :)
They’re doomed, doomed I tell you. They have have 8.3 years left.
The low was 16 here which is more than a few degrees below freezing IMO. But this wasn’t the first hard frost here anyway. That happened on Oct. 3rd.
As you say though, it was no surprise. I don’t think it was cold enough to kill any car batteries either unless they were already close to dead.
Has Greta van Thornberg weighed in on this news yet?
On the first of March. In Alabama. My wife said sure, I'll believe it when I see it.
Fast forward to next morning, and the temperature dropped like a stone. It was like turning the air conditioner on. One of our dachhunds went outside to use the latrine, and she got buried. It was like watching a submarine trying to navigate and surface. All I saw was this pile of snow, slowly working it's way toward the porch, and every few steps, she'd stop and poke her eyebrows and nose out of it, trying to get her bearings. It took two towels to get her warm and dry. I told Her Eminence, well, go roll around in the yard and tell me if you believe it now. We were in that 5"+ zone in the east. Shit happens. It's called 'weather'.
Naw, she can do that tomorrow when she is in Denver. She has a worse snow jinx than Al Gore
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
I literally just flew in 2.5 hours ago. Wife wanted to break out the blizzard wear upon exiting the airport “just in case”. I am wearing a pair of blue jeans; button down long sleeve top and some crogs. Temps are registering as 26 degrees, but it feels wonderful outside. Now, would I want to stay out that way for a couple hours? No. However, its fine and manageable; hoodies and you are good to go.
/Ground is still too warm for this over-hype to have any impact. That is why it feels so nice; you might see snow everywhere and even see your breathe; the ground temp’s are punching straight through still.
I am from the east coast BTW where it is not un-common to go negative 20 or 2-3 foot of snow unexpectedly.
