California wildfires are bad. Climate change will make them even worse, new study says

As bad as wildfires have been in Northern and Central California in recent years, another new study shows that climate change could make them even worse in the coming years.

That study, published by researchers from Brown University in the journal Environmental Research Letters, found that “climate has been the main driver of fire on a regional scale” in the Sierra Nevada region, according to Richard Vachula, the study’s lead author.

“We find that warm and dry conditions promote fire, which in light of climate model predictions suggests that future fires may be more extensive than we have observed in the last century,” he said in prepared remarks.

Previous studies have found that even wet winter conditions may not be enough to prevent a catastrophic summer season.

The team also looked at archaeological records of the Miwok Native American tribe, “that inhabited these mountains for millennia,” which used fire to control underbrush growth, according to the report.

The data suggested that even with those controlled burns, climate remained the dominant factor behind fire activity at the regional level.

“Our results are significant because they clarify the relative roles of human management and climate as controls of fire regimes in California, and they highlight the need to prepare for future fire activity,” Vachula said in prepared remarks.

Richard Vachula uses paleoecological and organic geochemical techniques to reconstruct terrestrial environmental histories (including climate, ecology, and anthropology) from lake sediment archives. His research has focused upon topics including the interplay between cultural perceptions of climate change and the Arctic, the Holocene climatic history of Alaska’s North Slope, and computational modelling of lake sediment-based fire history proxies. He is particularly interested in the dynamic interactions between fire, climate, ecology, and human land use.

More total bullshit a new study finds.

See the video in my post before this one. Burning acreage is WAY down. Remarkably so, over the last century. And the locations where it actually happens is also an interesting factoid.

Wait you mean wet conditions do not promote fire. Who would have known that.

Why isn’t PG&E suing the Sierra Club for prevention them from clearing the trees and brush from under the power lines?

An interesting new attention grabbing internet trick is to make a statement the declare something to prove that statement. I find it quite annoying. It is like a 2 part headline.

Studies show pretty much anything the studier wants. In the past, science dictated that a theory would be proposed and then you would try as hard as possible to disprove that theory. It could only be said to be true if you could fail to disprove it. Even then it would never be said to be true, just that it wasn’t proven false.

What passes for science these days is a study by anyone with college degrees can make a statement and then perform a study which is basically reading whatever you can find one the subject and ignoring anything that does not support the initial premise. Then it is treated as fact until it is forgotten due to some new study coming out proving some other contrived statement or if it is subsequently disproven by another study by someone with more education and providing that the new study demonstrates a fact that is acceptable to the peer community.

Since climate change has to be real (wink wink) then electricity should be permanently turned off statewide to prevent further destruction of the state. I am sure residents will adjust quickly to their own wind power and solar panels to recharge their cell phones.

He is absolutely killin’ it. I liked his back and forth with Potholer. It became pretty clear, based on their data and debate styles, which one had the winning hand in that one.

This is what nature does when left alone. Forests become overgrown, lightening strikes, the old, overgrown vegetation is consumed, and the forest grows back. It takes a while in human years, but is no big deal to the land. We know how to manage forests now to where we can live near them without a problem
But then along come “activists” and “environmentalists” who can’t see the forest for the trees.

Have these “scholars” ever produced a study that accurately predicted the future climate?

They have all been wrong since 1976.

Most moisture and coolest summer in decades. What Global Warming? The fires are caused by these environazis worshiping the forests.
