POWER.
Power over all of us.
If they have to lie, cheat, steal and murder, some of them, at least, will do so.
The ends justify the means.
So if they promise free tuition, debt forgiveness for student loans, free health care for illegal aliens, closing every coal mine, confiscating every gun, they will do it if it get them the votes to sit in the seat(s) of power.
A lot of what they promise they could not care a flying fig about, but will say to get the votes. Or not say.
